As a member of the Emergency Management Victoria surge workforce, I have operated as a public information(PIO) and Intelligence officer during the Black Summer fires in 2019 as well as connecting EMV and department social media teams onto a single platform for the COVID-19 response. I have also worked as a PIO and Personal Hardship Assistance team leader and have been a CFA and SES (NSW/QLD) volunteer which gives me a well rounded appreciation of both floods and fires.
Invited to nominate and being elected to the OSGeo Oceania Ltd board occurred during COVID-19 in 2020. The organisation promotes open-source geospatial systems and open data in Oceania and has run large conferences in Melbourne, Fiji, Wellington and recently Auckland. The conferences fund grants to communities to improve geospatial literacy and software development. During the time on the Board, positions included secretary and head of both the Membership and Communications working groups.
The membership approval process was laborious and there were duplicates and missing data. The system that was developed in Slack, Mailjet and Google Apps Script now allows a 24hr approval process and notification of success and is key to election transparency and improved membership satisfaction. With the organisation operating in multiple countries, governance, financial control and risk mitigation are key areas which require work,
