I was born in Zambia, and have spent my early adulthood in Australia since 2009. I have had the wonderful opportunity to be able to travel around the world, and also around western Australia, living in Broome for 6 years. This has allowed me to be able to understand and relate to a wider demographic of people, understand various cultures and gain important skills such as communication, comprehension, and social skills, and overall become a people person. Though I am naturally an introvert who enjoys her own space, I find working with people equally as challenging as it is rewarding. I have a natural ability to connect with people, I thrive in positive team environments and enjoy dedicating my time towards empowering, encouraging self-development, and making a small daily impact in people's lives. I am currently studying a degree in social sciences because I discovered my heart and passion lies within caring and empowering others, especially the disadvantaged. As the middle child in an African family of 6, there was a big age gap with my older siblings, I was practically raised to take care of those around me, raising my younger siblings, and being a safe space for others in the community, and understand the importance of community. Upon my arrival to Australia, I studied my diploma in children's services whilst working at the aged care facility Aegis. During this time, I felt unfulfilled by the specific career field, and due to my citizenship status, I was limited in job opportunities. But I understood I desired to be in the healthcare industry. I moved to Broom over 7 years ago, working as a childcare worker, while working I also started a job as a mobile support worker, working in the aboriginal community and educating young children, assisting children and their families with various activities. Over the years of working and raising my two boys in Broome, I quickly learned about the seriousness of mental health issues within the community; how so many young people are suffering from depression, isolation, neglect, and so many other mental health concerns, that leads to behaviours of concern. The combination of rich aboriginal culture and living in a small tight-knit community allowed me to see a space where I am needed and can assist in making the world a better place. This sparked the passion and desire to work as a social worker, and I moved back to Perth this year, after becoming a citizen to commence my degree in social science. This endeavor sparked the desire to learn more about mental health, and a longing to be the change in the next generation. Even if it's just by being a daily friendly face to talk to. Over the past year, I have had the opportunity to work with youths aging from age 5 up to 21, through community jobs. Which has allowed me to diversify my portfolio and broaden my experience. Assisting with activities of daily living, community support, companionship, and emotional support. I am looking forward to developing my skills and role as a support worker and ultimately, add value and be part of a supportive company I can work with long term.
