I worked night shift at Southern Cross Care for 1 year doing all shifts: mornings, Pm's and night shifts. Then spent 6 years working night shifts.

On night shifts I was responsible for 31 residents making sure their care needs were met; toileting, continence care, comfort, making sure they were not too cold, or not too hot, repositioning on regular intervals when required, encouraging fluids, being of emotional support, spending one-one-one time with those who were having trouble sleeping, unsettled or displaying behaviours.

Encouraging sleep patterns so that they could be active during the day and so able to join in on social activities and getting adequate night time sleep.

Monitoring health status by observing vital signs, using vital signs equipment then informing RN on shift.

Following RN directive.

Prioritising falls prevention by making sure that sensor beams are on and positioned in correct direction to alert resident movement and fast response to sensor beam activation, fast response to answer call bell.of residents that are likely falls risks.

Hourly checks on residents and keeping and eye and ear out for any movements so can offer assistance.

  • Followed care plan and directions to administer medications.

Documentation of all requirements for each resident from facility, new behaviours or concerns.

Being mindful of keeping noise to appropriate level to minimise noise.

Complete job tasks assigned to the shift; setting breakfast tables, refilling continence aid bags and placement of continence aid bags to each allocated residents wardrobes, replacing each residents water jugs and glasses with fresh water jugs and glasses.

Filing all paperwork left in night filing tray.

Providing food, refreshments to those requiring.
