Students feeling and knowing they belong in a class is one of the many goals teachers strive for. This is often yet a challenging task that teachers face due the varying dynamics and diverse personalities that exist across classrooms around the world. Achieving this goal is something I place a very high importance on.
I believe students flourish and achieve their best when they feel comfortable and included by not only by their peers but also their teachers. Strategies that I used daily in my classroom to encourage this environment include building rapport, collaborative learning tasks and consistent positive reinforcement. This promotes an inclusive environment and the development of social skills.
I believe the educator should play the role of facilitator rather than a traditional teacher. Asking for student feedback and opinion when necessary and providing students with multiple ways to access and submit work can help achieve this goal. This could include multiple learning task/assessment options to cater for the different learning styles a class presents.
Allowing students to utilize school technology devices is another important tool I incorporate into my lessons. The wide range of resources technology provides such as educational videos, websites, case studies and images allow students to access well rounded reliable information.
