  • Company Overview: Progen Pharmaceuticals Limited (2016-2021 operated as TBG Diagnostics Ltd) was a globally focused ASX/US OTC listed biotechnology company committed to improving patient outcomes through the discovery and development of small molecule-based cancer therapeutics. Progen's primary research was a proprietary drug candidate known as PG545 (Pixatimod). PG545 was a novel immunotherapy oncology agent designed to target the tumour microenvironment. The PG545 programme was spun out of Progen Pharmaceuticals in mid-2016 to a privately held company, Zucero Pty Ltd.
  • Within my role at Progen from March 2012 to August 2013 I was the sole executive employee running the company with a part-time consultant CFO and reporting directly to the Board of Directors. During this time, I had expanded research duties as I was wholly in charge of the PG545 Research Program. From August 2013 to January 2016, I co-managed the PG545 Research Program with Dr Keith Dredge who was rehired as a full time senior manager in the role of Director of Drug Development.

My roles and responsibilities while the PG545 program was under my direct control included:

  • Lead and directly managed two PhD qualified scientists and two external consultants
  • Set Research Budget and managed Research and Development Expenditure
  • Clinical Trials
  • Pre-Clinical Research
  • Manage international research collaborations

My general duties and responsibilities included:

  • Act as internal legal counsel by undertaking activities such as drafting and reviewing contracts, providing legal advice, procuring external specialist legal advice and manage any litigation
  • Manage legal contracts and counterparty performance
  • Manage investor relations including drafting and preparation of ASX announcements, Australian and US (20F) Annual Reports and shareholder communications
  • Oversight of appropriate compliance relevant to the business in the areas of facilities, services and products
  • Identify and drive business opportunities for the group companies
  • Direct the research programs solely or in conjunction with the Director of Drug Development
  • Manage the intellectual property portfolio
  • Negotiate and maintain group company insurance policies
  • Prepare R&D Tax Incentive Claims.

Immune Solutions Ltd is a biotechnology company established to commercialise innovative applications of its proprietary oral delivery technology, Liporale. Immune Solutions is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Otago Innovation and operated as a 'virtual' organisation.

Within these roles I undertook the following research related duties and responsibilities:

  • Assistance and preparation of research grant applications
  • Assisting researchers in developing research proof-of concept studies to establish commercial utility of their research for new products and services
  • Identifying, protecting and managing University Intellectual Property primarily through patenting
  • Intellectual property due diligence (disclosure, inventorship inquiry and lab book review), patentability assessments (scope and application of legal tests such as novelty, inventive step, obviousness, unity of invention), prior art and freedom to operate searching
  • Develop project or technology intellectual property strategies
  • Prepare draft provisional, PCT and national filing patent applications
  • Manage and respond to domestic and international intellectual property prosecution
  • Drafting trademark applications for the United States, Europe, Australia and New Zealand
  • Drafting Deeds of Assignment transferring intellectual property rights from employee to employer.
