Work Practice/History & Clinical Procedural Skills

During my time as a Student Physiotherapist, I completed four diverse clinical placements, each contributing to my development across various specialties. Initially observed by my supervisors, I was gradually given more independence as my competence grew. These placements allowed me to develop a well-rounded skillset, gaining hands-on experience in assessing, treating, and managing patients in critical care, neurology, and learning disabilities.

Critical Care and Surgery, Sheffield Teaching Hospital (2021-02-08 -2021-03-26)

  • Assessed and managed patients recovering from surgery, including those requiring intensive care, and participated in early mobilisation, respiratory care, monitoring vitals and rehabilitation strategies to prevent post-operative complications.
  • Developed skills in handling complex cases, working closely with interprofessional teams, enhancing communication and collaboration in high-pressure, critical care environments.

Outpatient MSK, The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust (2021-05-31 -2021-07-09)

  • Assessed and treated patients with musculoskeletal conditions, including joint injuries, musculoskeletal pain, and post-surgical rehabilitation, using treatment modalities like manual therapy and exercise prescription.
  • Performed objective assessments (range of motion, functional movement), developed clinical reasoning skills, and established personalised treatment plans, while managing patient progress over multiple sessions and adjusting plans as needed.

Neurology, AWRC Neurology Placement, Sheffield (2021-10-18 -2021-12-17)

  • Worked with patients with neurological conditions, including stroke, Parkinson’s disease, and Multiple Sclerosis, to design and implement rehabilitation programs focused on improving mobility, strength, and independence.
  • Conducted assessments using tools such as the Modified Ashworth Scale, Berg Balance Scale, and functional gait analysis, and tailored treatments to individual patient needs.
  • Gained experience in advanced therapeutic interventions like neuroplasticity-based exercises and gait training, enhancing understanding of Neuro rehabilitation and managing long-term neurological conditions.

Inpatient Learning Disabilities, Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation (2022-03-07 -2022-05-28)

  • Assessed mobility, strength, and functional movement in individuals with learning disabilities and complex care needs, providing tailored exercises to improve quality of life.
  • Adapted Physiotherapy interventions to suit each patient’s cognitive and physical abilities, working closely with families and caregivers to ensure treatment plans were achievable and sustainable at home. This allowed me to gain a strong foundation in delivering holistic, individualised care, focusing on long-term rehabilitation goals.
