Head of Artificial Intelligence

NEOS Life Insurance Group
04.2023 - 02.2024
  • Directed teams in the design and craft of innovative AI-driven solutions that significantly improved the effectiveness and precision of the company's life insurance underwriting tool through advanced prompt engineering techniques, LLM fine-tuning and distillation, and RAG knowledge retrieval.
  • Led senior stakeholder management and collaboration initiatives between software engineers, underwriters, actuaries, and stakeholders across legal and compliance, ensuring regulatory requirements were met with a focus on risk assessment and ethical AI implementation in enterprise environments.
  • Implemented cutting-edge AI technologies to accelerate life insurance underwriting processes, resulting in a 4.4x quicker response time for insurance underwriters through scalable and robust AI approaches and business strategies, while ensuring secure access to sensitive data and establishing efficient escalation protocols in a low latency environment.
  • Ran AI Safety Training workshops and regular meetings on how to best balance the utility and safety of language models.
  • Fostered a culture of continuous improvement where internal users were encouraged to try prompt injection attacks on sandboxed AI products under development.

Chief Technical Officer

Source Localisation
01.2022 - 05.2023
  • Managed a team of cloud architects and full-stack developers to advance the mineral prospectivity mapping capabilities for a mining exploration company.
  • Implemented advanced analytics and satellite imagery techniques in a high-performance-computing hybrid Azure environment, streamlining mineral prospectivity mapping and boosting deep learning capabilities with robust forecasting approaches and Hadoop-based platforms, while ensuring compliance with strict industry regulations.

Postdoctoral Research Fellow

University of Sydney
08.2016 - 12.2021
  • Pioneered experimental frameworks integrating behavioural paradigms and cutting-edge neuroimaging techniques to enhance understanding of brain development in children.
  • Collaborated with interdisciplinary teams across the School of Psychology, School of Education, Woolcock Institute, and Brain and Mind Centre to drive innovative research projects focused on cognitive neuroscience and brain development.
  • Authored influential papers on neuropsychopharmacology of dopaminergic stimulants, neuropsychological traits of ADHD, and educational learning procedures for 'far transfer' including learning through analogy and productive failure simulations.

Project Demos

  • Australian Legislation Interpretation Tool, Developed an Australian Legislation Interpretation Tool utilising advanced NLP techniques, LLMs, sophisticated prompting strategies, vector embeddings, and Knowledge Graphs to analyse and interpret complex legislative texts with concrete reasoning. Leveraged technical proficiency in ML algorithms to ensure ethical and accurate model design, aligning with AI ethics and governance frameworks. Proactively identified gaps in AI behavior and implemented continuous improvement strategies to enhance model performance. The project scans Australia's legislative websites for changes and automatically recomputes the vector embeddings with robust scaling capability.
  • Searching for Critical Minerals Through Text, Developed a power search and multi-LLM chat tool that scans over 4TB of historical mining exploration reports submitted to the West Australian government for any block of land that the government has allowed a company to explore for minerals (referred to as an exploration tenement), ensuring alignment with business goals. It is compulsory that a company performs exploration activity and provides the results to the government in order to keep the tenement, ensuring compliance with regulatory metrics. The project currently only contains data from Western Australia (the country's largest state with very significant mining activity). The project could easily be expanded to cover all of Australia and indeed other countries, showcasing adaptability to diverse landscapes.
