Summary

Identifying as an Aboriginal person, a proud Dharug and Gubbi Gubbi descendant, I remain a member of Mingaletta Aboriginal Community on the Woy Woy Peninsula after recently relocating to Cliftleigh in the Hunter region. I understand the culture, societal functions and issues faced by Aboriginal communities am passionate about closing the gap and developing deep pride in the cultural strength that comes from a 60000-year history as First Nations people of Australia. I possess experience in the establishment, delivery and administration of targeted programs and resources for young Aboriginal students in a school environment, provision of cultural workshops in schools and communities. As part of my cultural obligation, over many years I have taught Aboriginal dance and music to children, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous, of all ages. In partnership with Mingaletta and local schools, I have worked to engage vulnerable children in after school activities and build pride in Aboriginal culture.

I am a dedicated and experienced worker with over 10 years of experience in education and community engagement and family preservation and restoration. I have demonstrated expertise in working with children dealing with trauma, and families in need, with a focus on building parenting capacity, child protection, and creating nurturing environments and safe communities.

Newpin (New Parent and Infant Network), through Uniting, is about bringing parents and their children back together, stronger than ever following separation while children have been in care. Newpin aims for parents to therapeutically address their personal and family issues and help their children transition out of care to restoration into a positive, parental environment.

As a Family Worker for Uniting Newpin my role encompasses coordinating, implementing, and evaluating parent education groups, along with facilitating therapeutic parent support groups. Taking time to sensitively get to know clients is instrumental in offering personalized guidance to parents. Collaborating within the team is vital for empowering parents and nurturing their parenting capabilities. Supporting families to develop the necessary skills, and advocating for them throughout the court process, is not just work for me, it is a passion.

I am also responsible for providing monthly strength-based reports, ensuring a comprehensive overview of progress, engaging in daily phone calls and meticulous notetaking and record-keeping to assist the legal process of restoration. This is a long and usually difficult process for families who most often have a trauma history and I have a demonstrated advocacy in assisting parents, while working alongside DCJ, to achieve family restoration for best outcomes for children.
