Professional Development

I have participated in a series of professional development workshops designed to raise my level of understanding of key individual and team related behaviours and actions. The major workshop topics included: DISC; Conflict; Values; Crucial Conversations skills practices; individual and group decision making skills.

Understanding my DISC profile (I am an ID; 39% and 24%) and the DISC profiles of others in the workshops. This provided me with opportunities to practice this awareness in coached decision tasks as described below;

Understanding my conflict management style, those being avoiding or accommodating, and the conflict management style of others in the workshops. This provided me with opportunities to practice this awareness in group decision tasks described below;

Deep Dive into Personal Values - this activity was very helpful in shaping my deeper level of understanding about what motivates me, such as values of self-respect, friendships and excitement. I have continued to reflect on this activity and am far more conscious now of how values can drive personal and professional life choices.

Crucial Conversations skills practices - these workshops provided me with opportunities to practice holding difficult conversations in a planned, structured way. This included gathering all relevant facts before engaging with the difficult person, and empathetically encouraging this person to help me/us understand how we could resolve the issues. The key take-aways from this were; prepare, obtaining the facts and, utilising empathy to encourage constructive dialogue.

Coached team decision making tasks - we engaged in a number of challenging group decision tasks that provided me with the skills to monitor my own behaviours (DISC, Conflict Style and, Values) whilst working in a demanding and diverse group. A key take-away for me was the need to sometimes back off my ID DISC style to allow others to have a voice in decisions, thus engendering a richer conversation with the group and a much better informed final decision reached.
