I have worked as a private tutor for a total of 5 students during the past two years, teaching VCE English as an Additional Language and (occasionally)VCE Physics. 3 out of 5 of my students graduated in recent years from Carey Baptist Grammar School with satisfying EAL results. From the start of 2021, I have commenced my job experience as an EAL tutor to one Year 12 VCE student and two Year 11 VCE students. In the 2021 to 2022 summer holidays I have assisted another Year 12 VCE student in EAL and Physics (predominantly EAL). Upon the commencement of 2023 I tutored another VCE EAL student in her final year of high school.
I have constantly received positive feedback from my students throughout my tutoring experience, as I interacted with them in weekly sessions in a comfortable and engaging teaching environment. As a result, my students' academic performances significantly improved in the process. As I was working as a private tutor, a high level of flexibility in time management was required as class times needed to be adjusted in accordance with my students' availabilities as well as their assessments from school (I also traveled to my students' home in time periods without the Covid lockdown, while the rest of the sessions took place via zoom). I demonstrated whole-hearted dedication and a strong work ethic as I conceived and adjusted the study plans for each of my students so that their academic potential could be maximised. I maintained a high level of dependability, reliability and responsibility as I utilised lesson plans for each student, giving as much aid to my students as I could in EAL topics such as essay writing, listening and language analysis, as well as communicating the academic progress of each student with their parents via Wechat.
On another note, my personal skills were also boosted by my tutoring career, and I developed an interest in tutoring, as well as working in other jobs in the field of education. During these teaching sessions I kept a positive attitude and the motivation to prepare for my classes, and an interest to teach, to interact with students, which later transformed into a passion. I became more and more motivated as I did considerable research on relevant documents and learning materials, compiled and created professional handout notes to be used in my tutoring classes. Furthermore, my confidence was also promoted as I participated in these teaching sessions.
