I have spent the last few months interning as an Excavator Engineering Apprentice and have experienced many valuable opportunities to learn and grow. During this time I have had the opportunity to work on a wide variety of excavator projects and work with experienced technicians and crews. Below are the key takeaways and lessons I have learnt during my apprenticeship.
Firstly, I learnt about the basic operation and maintenance of excavators. Through hands-on experience, I familiarised myself with the various controls and functions of the excavator and learnt to adjust and operate the machine according to the demands of the job. I also learnt to carry out routine maintenance and overhaul, such as cleaning the machine and changing the lubricating oil. These skills are essential to becoming a competent excavator operator.
In addition, I learned about safety awareness and accident prevention. Excavators are powerful and dangerous tools, so safety awareness is crucial. During my internship, I received safety-related training and learnt how to properly use personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety procedures for excavators. I also learnt about the causes of accidents and preventive measures and learnt to report and handle accidents and emergencies in a timely manner.
I am confident that this internship experience will have a positive impact on my future career and make me more confident in meeting the challenges of the engineering field.
