Summary

Residing in Hobart all my life, I studied Computer Engineering at UTAS while supporting myself by working at McDonald's and serving in the Army. Since then, I have gained experience in industrial mining research, focusing on autonomous systems. I have also worked as an instrumentation engineer, developing turnkey software and hardware solutions. Currently, I hold a position within a technical team, managing an electronics lab and serving as a senior science systems engineer on scientific voyages.

My diverse career experiences have provided me with a solid foundation in research support, encompassing software, hardware, project management, and client-focused project delivery solutions.

Work History

Sea Going Electronics Engieenr

Australian Antarctic Division
Kingston, Tasmania
05.2023 - Current

Providing high-level technical support to clients in solitary or group project settings, whether in the office or at sea, is my primary focus to enable scientific research. A significant milestone in my career so far is the Denman Glacier campaign, a 70-day voyage with in a team. Onboard the RSV Nuyina, this can range from procuring spare components and contingency network equipment to working closely with a scientific team on a project I am managing.

I have experience in mapping raw data flow from instruments and sensors on deck to the Science Data Management System (SDMS) using modern software languages, libraries, and frameworks to develop data systems. This process typically involves UDP broadcasting to the data acquisition system (OpenRVDAS), collating data in primary databases like PostgreSQL, and broadcasting it graphically via networks using dynamic web frameworks such as Flask and Data in Real Time (DiRT). Beyond handling instruments, I have worked with various data sets, including GIS, raster data, and bathymetric grid data from eco sounders. These data sets and flows are integrated using Python, JavaScript, HTML, SQL, and occasionally stronger typed languages like C.

Instrumentation Engineer

Entura
Hobart, Tasmania
06.2021 - 06.2023

Instrumentation and Communications in Entura’s water management team. I completed my undergraduate studies in Computer Systems Engineering at the University of Tasmania, with previous experience in SCADA and industrial automation. As an engineer for Entura, I am a technical consultant providing hydrographic instrumentation and remote telemetry solutions, utilizing my background in Computer Systems Engineering and experience interfacing instrumentation and communication apparatus with environmental monitoring, software, hardware, and automation.

My experience spans the detailed design, quality control, verification and validation, installation, inspection, maintenance, and fault resolution of a wide variety of control systems. My background in SCADA and remote telemetry makes me an integral member of the hydrographic team specializing in instrumentation and communications, contributing to the entire engineering process.

EXPERTISE SYSTEM INTEGRATION, INSTRUMENTATION, AND COMMUNICATION

Bringing previous experience as a controls engineer from a diverse range of projects covering remote telemetry and data acquisition, software design for automation in mining and industrial environments, communication scheme and networking development for remote environments and mining equipment. I have experience with integrating instrumentation and communication solutions with multiple control platforms.
