Having managed a Tasmanian business from a start-up to a medium sized company for 34 years, 20 years of that in the tourism industry, has given me a thorough understanding of the visitor industry. I fully comprehend the consistent target market changes due to external factors and the need to build flexibility into the tourism plans. I am fully onboard with the 2030 Visitor Economy Strategy and feel that I can offer a real contribution to the board in getting these outcomes delivered. Now that my company has got a great management team running the business, I can commit my skills and experiences learned at the Cradle Coast Authority and Anvers Confectionery to the Tourism Tasmania Board.
Managed the business successfully from a cottage industry to a 5M company employing 44 staff.
Built Anvers as Tasmania's premium artisan chocolate brand.
Anvers' tourism site, the House of Anvers, hosts over 200,000 visitors per year, and numbers continue to grow.
I have been member of TICT and THA since the start of our venture into Tourism in 2002.
I have set the strategy and brand direction of the business, delivered successful outcomes and successfully guided a team of area managers to create a great workplace.
We have trained over 120 staff to a minimum of certificate III ( area managers up to Diploma level) onsite and I have a comprehensive understanding of the need in good Hospitality and Tourism training.
Started the "Cream of Tas" together with Jane Bennet (then Ashgrove) and Lindi Dornauf ( then Christmas Hills Raspberry Farm) to cross-promote our businesses to the tourism industry. This evolved into " The Cradle to Coast tasting trail" now representing over 50 producing members that not only cross-promote the venues but also market the region as a foodie experience destination and a yearly festival.
I helped design the new membership structure, brand protection, and marketing and management strategy.
After finishing my 4 year term I agreed to an extension to help complete the Authority's management and governance restructure. We achieved fantastic outcomes and introduced many efficiencies.
I was actively involved in strategy and delivery of outcomes, risk management, budgeting and monitoring of financials, as well as executive staff management.
As chair of the Audit and Risk committee I worked very closely with the management in areas of Financial stability and accountability, Risk mitigation and management, and compliance.
