Job Description:(MEDICAL-SURGICAL-ORTHOPEDIC UNIT )
1. Receives endorsement from outgoing shift.
• Identifies, assesses and sets priorities during shift.
• Identify and prepare patients who will undergo special treatments, procedures and surgery.
• Checks on patients and other special equipment.
• Checks on patients with unusual complaints and usual symptoms to be referred immediately
2. Makes Nursing rounds.
• Checks patient's condition, level of consciousness.
• Checks neuro vital signs
• Checks IV fluid, IV site and other attachments
• Gives special instructions to patients/watchers.
• Maintain patency of NGT, Foley Catheter and Endotracheal tubes.
3. Checks on the accuracy and completeness of the medication cards on the kardex.
• Segregates the medication cards of the patients who are nothing per orem (NPO) or who will undergo special treatments and procedures
• Identifies food and drug allergies of patients
• Follow up the drugs which had been skin tested and not yet started.
• Administer the drugs to the patients (oral, intravenous and topical).
• Refers and follows-up the intravenous solutions, and for the incorporation of intravenous additives and correct intravenous calibrations.
• Requests for medicines needed for the care of patient and checks the medicines sent by the pharmacy.
• Checks on treatment that are to continued, discontinued or on hold.
• Checks on accurate and complete charting of medications and treatment administered to the patient.
• Administers emergency drugs.
4. Assists the physicians during the rounds.
• Secures patients and family consent for the treatment and surgery to be done to the patient.
• Prepares materials for special procedures done at bedside.
• Assists in dressing.
• Monitors condition of pre and post-operative patients.
5. Carries out doctor's orders on the kardex and makes sure that it is carried out.
• Follows up laboratory exams and results.
• Scan chart to request medicines.
• Encodes request to the computer for laboratory/ISD procedures.
• Makes medication cards and writes entries on the medication sheet.
• Prepares and follow up IV fluids.
6. Responsible for accurate and complete charting and endorsement to the next shift.
7. Gives assignments to nursing attendants for dressings and other treatments.
8. Monitor completion of delegated tasks.
9. Coordinated with dietary department regarding patient's diet.
10. Facilitates transfer of patients from station to other special areas for treatment and diagnostic examinations.
11. Makes referrals to the doctors and consultants.
12. Gives Naso-Gastric Tube feedings.
13. Performs IV insertion if intern on duty/resident is not available.
14. Ensures proper turning and positioning of patients.
15. Checks completeness of emergency cart.
16. Assists in bed making if nursing aides are busy. Checks and follows-up change of linens.
17. Mans the computer in computation of patient's bills. Prepares and checks charges of patients for OR and special procedures.
18. Orients newly admitted patients and significant others to physical set up of the station, all system, double lock doors, and remote control for TV, visiting time, equipment in the room and other facilities and support services.
19. Coordinates with auxiliaries for oxygen replacement, lifting and positioning of patients to wheelchair and stretchers for transfer to other areas.
20. Answer phone calls and inquiries from patients, family and other health care providers.
21. Returns unused medicines and supplies.
22. Gets the intravenous drugs in the pharmacy.
23. Gives going home instructions to patients for discharge.
24. Prepares census and tallies with the supervisor.
25. Prepares temporary death certificate and facilitates transfer of cadaver to morgue.
26. Attends in-service trainings, unit meetings and nursing service meetings.
27. Maintain Cleanliness of the station and patients room.
28. Coordinates with the clinical instructor as to students, patient's assignment and procedures to be performed. Follows up/supervises students in the absence of Clinical Instructor.
29. Performs other duties that maybe assigned by the superior.
