6. My own family legacy has been based on generations in the defence force, From Light Horse Brigade, SAS and special forces in India. The ethics of determination, resilience and rising above to achieve the goal are the fabric of my work ethic instilled at an early age. During the Victorian bush fires of 2005, Falls Creek ski village was surrounded by raging fires (the fire that destroyed the original man from a snowy river hut). I held the position of supervising Snowmaker during winter & Works Labourer during Summer. The Village went into a blackout for 2 weeks, the sky was crimson constantly, and 100-metre flames raged up the mountain face connecting the village. We had 8 different firefighting teams from 3 states and 2 water bombing helicopters (Elvis). I suggested and implemented the repurposing of the extensive snowmaking system to a firefighting system that formed kilometres of water carrying a 6” pipeline pumping 300 litres per second out of each snow-making gun site. This water was drawn from the 14 billion litre Rocky River Dam and created concentric rings of defensive fire suppressant ability. I led 5 team members through the night shifts over this intense period, monitoring the fire, vigilant and operationally prepared to action the system to suppress & contain any outbreaks within the perimeter of the village (there were plenty), I liaised with fire crew chiefs, Falls Village management, and the remaining crew dedicated to the village, I gained incredible insight into how others and myself react and respond to serious duress and situations that require more than a powerful work ethic, situations that show the real character of an individual. (The Fire did not get past the snow-making/fire-fighting system perimeter).
