Mine Geologist

Fortescue Metals Group
Pilbara
06.2012 - 05.2016

Fortescue Metals group are one of the major Iron ore producers in the world. I worked as a Mine Geologist at the Christmas Creek Operation which is the largest Iron Ore mine in Australia. Christmas Creek is composed of flat-lying ore deposits. They include iron, silica, aluminium and phosphorous minerals. Both conventional mining and surface mining techniques are used at Christmas Creek. Surface mining is unique to Fortescue operations and is well suited to these flat-lying ore formations. My role was to maintain a high standard of QA/QC and maximise ore tonnage in production through careful analysis of the Block Model for my designated mining pit. Liaison with Earth Moving Contractor company personnel as well as other technical departments within Fortescue was an integral part of this role.

  • Ore block design and optimisation using Vulcan software.
  • Maintaining the grade control model.
  • Reconciliation.
  • Production data management.
  • ROM and stockyard Management.
  • Contractor management (mining, crushing, and haulage).
  • Presentation to new contractors on mine geology process and ore characteristics.
  • Production monitoring.
  • Geotechnical monitoring and reporting.
  • Geotechnical presentation roll outs.
  • Ore spotting.
  • Ore Block Mark-Ups.
  • Blast Hole sampling and logging.
  • Product quality control (Fe grade, contaminants, moisture content, and sizing).
  • End of month reporting.
  • QAQC.
  • Regular HSE inspections.

Exploration Geologist

Fortescue Metals Group
01.2011 - 06.2012

Nydinghu is one of Fortescues largest Iron Ore Deposits, comprising of over 2 billion tonnes of high grade Fe ore. My role at Nydinghu was logging on an RC drill rig and data management of the logged data into an Access database. I was also interested in developing my 3D visualisation skills of the various structures within the deposit by carrying around printed Cross Sections of previously drilled holes. This enabled a better understanding of the underlying stratigraphy and mineralization trends. Also, since a large volume of groundwater could pose potential problems for future mining strategies, the geologists were undertaking groundwater measurements and storing this data for future analysis.

  • Adhering to the company safety policies and procedures. Conforming to the requirements of working in remote areas including vehicle maintenance car tyres and tyre changeover etc.
  • Reporting to the Senior Project Geologist on drilling based Iron ore exploration projects in the Pilbara region.
  • RC rig supervision of drilling crews and ensuring sample quality is maintained.
  • RC logging and sample QAQC supervision.
  • Use of MapInfo to design Maps for drill lines and to display Mineralisation.
  • Use of GIS maps and GPS to locate drilling sites and rig setups.
  • Interpretation of geological cross sections for stratigraphy and mineralization trends.
  • Data management of high volume RC and diamond core data.
  • Interpretation of XRF assay data and sample QAQC checks.
  • Logging of diamond drill cores for lithology, structure, ore textures and core recovery.
  • Diamond Core Rig management- Including drill hole planning and hole detail instructions, ensuring pads were ready for drilling and ensuring timely water supply infrastructure.
  • Supervision of drill contractors and logistics.
  • Member of the Emergency Response Team (ERT) requiring significant training as well as a high level of fitness.
  • Water measurements taken at specified intervals (EC and Ph).
  • Regular HSE Inspections on Drill Rigs.

Exploration Geologist

Tronox Northern Operations
09.2010 - 01.2011

The raw materials for Tronoxs’ titanium minerals business come from ancient shoreline deposits in the Lancelin to Gingin area, approximately 170 kilometers north of Perth. Grains of valuable heavy minerals were deposited on ancient shorelines thousands of years ago, where the action of waves and wind formed ‘belts’ of minerals called strand lines. The heavy mineral component within the deposited sands in then extracted to produce zircon, rutile and leucoxene.

  • This position required a large degree of responsibility to ensure the safety of all of those involved and that constant communication was being undertaken.
  • Use of GIS maps and GPS to locate drilling sites and rig setups.
  • Supervision of drilling contractors working in remote locations to ensure a high standard of QA/QC.
  • Geological logging of drill samples for mineral sands classification. Heavy mineral percentage was estimated after panning.
  • Interpretation of geological cross sections for stratigraphy and mineralization trends.
  • Liaison with driller and offsider was integral to this role.
  • Liaisons with highly experienced Field Assistant to ensure all tracks were to standard.
  • Communicated to the Senior Geologist on a daily basis to ensure targets of drilling were met and that safety was maintained.
  • Four wheel driving skills developed through extensive off road exposure in very sandy areas.
  • Leading by example was integral to this role and communication across all parties was kept at all times.
  • Regular HSE inspection on drill rig.
