Skills

    Instructional Ability:

"Furthermore, in addition to sensing the unspoken criticism of others, children singled out

for praise may tend to become overly reliant on external rewards As Sylva (1994) and Dwek's (1998) work suggests, it is more effective to ensure that children are motivated by the learning itself rather than becoming dependent on adult approval" C Nutbrown (2003)

    Presentation and organisation:

Being well-organised with good presentations and interesting activities for each lesson is a strength, which I enhance with good use of ICT - providing a marvellous platform for 21st Century skills See https://appmilanotecom/1OE3Vd1swHMZgl?p=Qa3Dj7ybhIF

    Engagement, communication and observation:

Lessons are designed for each child to gain the best and most efficient understanding

    See some lesson ideas

    here, https://docsgooglecom/document/d/116F0cBsDV88kEHvufC2O9-pHUi5oWsN7/edit?usp=sharin

Where understanding is hard to gain, the student is never humiliated but drawn to

    knowledge with support and encouragement

I love to excel at teaching and find it easy to test the waters and figure out students'

understandings, I have much respect for Dylan William' embedded Formative Assessments,

    see

    https://teacherheadcom/2019/01/10/revisiting-dylan-wiliams-five-brilliant-formative-assessment-strategies

While explicit teaching is essential, inquiry pedagogy garners curiosity and learning at its

    best

Good resources are essential, see the example of lesson ideas, with the main focus on

    Visual Arts; https://appmilanotecom/1OE3Vd1swHMZgl?p=Qa3Dj7ybhIF

    Connection and rhythm (routine):

Life in all its fullness does not begin as we step into heaven but is a daily hope and way

of living as Christians, right now This spurs the concept that we 'learn from life' and for life with genuine meaning-making in the classroom day by day It also spurs the belief that every child has the ability (with the right teacher support), to reach their own personal and happy full potential Learning is not something we graduate from, we learn until we die It is a way of living in harmony with God, in His world and alongside people

Students cannot learn well or to the best of their ability if they are not happy and/or connected to their teacher Instructional ability strongly hinges on an ability to create an atmosphere of love, security and respect for all, and is the only tool that truly brings a quiet peace, that can process a sense of wonder in God and of the world we live in - and in this, we find the key to all good pedagogy

I do like Place-based Pedagogy - connection to people, place and community which develops a real sense of belonging, This inclusive pedagogy of inquiry develops in each child's deep desire to learn

See my argument that ACARA Geography is Place-based Pedagogy and central to well-being in the classroom

    PowerPoint: https://drivegooglecom/file/d/10zR0QIugH1t80dluyey8PjLgyaCfBL8O/view?usp=sharing

    Presentation: https://drivegooglecom/file/d/10zR0QIugH1t80dluyey8PjLgyaCfBL8O/view?usp=sharing

A good routine and rhythm are essential in a class to promote flow and well-being

    Pastoral Care

Pastoral care is intricately linked with teaching skills My social work degree prepared me for a life of informal Christian counselling; although this is not our professional role as teachers - it gives useful tools My Forest school and Foster Care work have honed these skills to another level

Where allowed, prayer and Bible reading, walking with God and worshipping are as natural as breathing and are not laboured or forced And so it is a natural part o the classroom too - sharing spiritual things is a lifestyle, not just words It is kindness, comfort, and joy, it is leading, directing, redirecting, mentoring, helping and guiding together in the class

    Student Management

Habits are foundational to a happy well-behaved class If students are in the habit of listening only if being yelled at, for example, it sets the atmosphere for ongoing conflict Whereas a class of happy inquiry, and exciting exploration; a class where every child knows their value, is praised and encouraged and students are drawn into a learning culture and passion for learning, thrives - and needs less management, as they honour and are engrossed in the learning process

I am not afraid of changing tempo, revisiting and changing a focus or learning experience in a meaningful way, so as to win the class over to learn and enjoy life in all its fullness - such is the calling of a Christian teacher

The challenge lies with the teachers, more than the students

Teaching is about recognising failed moments and creating new opportunities that facilitate resilience and positive attitudes towards learning, life and others

    Interpersonal skills

I enjoy collaborative learning on a professional level And although I have been my own boss for many years, I enjoy good leadership and support with directives, as I do love to learn myself!

I thrive on discussion and stand up for truth and others

I thrive on connection and a robust healthy relationships, with the class to enable good learning

I have thoroughly enjoyed South African, New Zealand and Australian experiences of working with many cultures from around the world

    Organisational Skills

I put a lot of effort into planning, and I am a confident teacher

I also believe that class plans need to be flexible enough to meet the need in the moment - going faster or slower, recapping or jumping ahead etc

    I enjoy being very well-organised!
