Juan Manuel Cordero Solarte

Launceston,TAS

Summary

I am a disciplined and committed overseas-trained doctor with over seven years of broad clinical experience across emergency medicine, intensive care, haematology-oncology, and primary care. My diverse professional background has equipped me with strong procedural competence, sound clinical judgement, and a calm, focused approach in resource-limited and high-pressure environments. I am known for my effective communication, cultural sensitivity, and collaborative teamwork, particularly when caring for patients from underserved and Indigenous communities. My short-term goal is to integrate into the Australian healthcare system and complete the necessary requirements for general medical registration. In the long term, I aspire to pursue speciality training in a surgical field, with a strong interest in General Surgery or Otorhinolaryngology, where I can apply my clinical experience and commitment to patient-centred care.

I stopped working as a Resident Medical Officer in Colombia to take a bridging course for the AMC MCQ. After moving to Australia in late 2022, my wife undertook courses while I worked and studied. In July 2024, I began a Master of Public Health at Macquarie University, which I am still completing

Work History

Hospital Medical Officer

Hospital Mayor Méderi
12.2019 - 02.2022
  • Position: Hospital Medical Officer.
  • Facility: Hospital Mayor Mederi, Cl. 24 #29-45, Bogotá, Colombia, Phone: +57 601 7055999.
  • Full-time position.
  • At Méderi Hospital, a level IV high-complexity institution, I worked under the Haematology and Oncology services, contributing to the multidisciplinary care of patients with complex malignancies. My role involved participating in daily ward rounds, reviewing interdepartmental referrals, and managing both inpatients and outpatient clinics. I provided care to patients undergoing chemotherapy, with a particular focus on education and prevention strategies for febrile neutropenia and treatment-related complications. This position strengthened my clinical reasoning, communication skills, and ability to deliver compassionate care to patients with chronic, often life-limiting illnesses.

Gap of practice: From September 2019 to November 2019, I did not practice medicine because I relocated to Bogotá to undertake a two-month study program in preparation for medical exams and entry into fellowship programs.

ICU Hospital Medical Officer

Del Río Clinic
09.2017 - 05.2018
  • Position: ICU Hospital Medical Officer.
  • Facility: Del Río Clinic, Carrera 3ª, Avenida del Río #12-08, Montería, Córdoba, Colombia, Phone: +57 604 7848985.
  • Part-time position.
  • At this fourth-level hospital, I worked primarily in the Intensive Care Unit, providing multidisciplinary care to critically ill patients. My role involved reviewing referrals from the Emergency Department and other hospital wards, including the management of post-operative complications. Under supervision, I assisted with advanced procedures such as tracheal intubation and central venous line placement. I was responsible for the ongoing monitoring and clinical management of ICU patients, ensuring timely interventions, and contributing to decision-making within the critical care team.

This was a part-time job that I held simultaneously with my position at Zayma Clinic, where I worked until September 26, 2019.

ED and ICU Hospital Medical Officer

Zayma Clinic
08.2016 - 09.2019
  • Position: Hospital Medical Officer
  • Facility: Zayma Clinic. Cl. 28 #7 - 11, Montería, Córdoba, Colombia, Phone: +57 604 7976510
  • Full-time position
  • During my time at Zayma Hospital, a high-acuity level IV facility, I initially worked in the Emergency Department for six months, managing triage, ambulatory cases, acute presentations, and resuscitations in a high-volume setting with a significant burden of trauma and motor vehicle accidents. I provided care across all age groups, including adult, pediatric, and geriatric patients. Following this, I transitioned to the Intensive Care Unit, where I participated in daily rounds and managed critically ill patients with complex conditions. Under supervision, I gained further experience in invasive procedures such as tracheal intubation, central venous and hemodialysis catheter insertion, and lumbar punctures. This role further developed my clinical judgment, procedural confidence, and teamwork in high-acuity settings.

Hospital Medical Officer

Montería Clinic
07.2015 - 07.2016
  • Position: Hospital Medical Officer
  • Facility: Montería Clinic, Cra. 4 #60-35, Montería, Córdoba, Colombia, Phone: +57 604 7890 081.
  • Full-time position
  • At this tertiary-level hospital in a regional setting, I completed my mandatory medical social service. I began my role in the General Medicine and Obstetrics & Gynaecology wards, where I managed inpatients and was actively involved in supervising and supporting labour, including complicated deliveries. I later transitioned to the Emergency Department, providing acute care to adult and paediatric patients with a wide range of medical, orthopaedic and obstetric emergencies. I also assisted in urgent surgical procedures and performed essential interventions such as resuscitation and immobilisation. During this period, I contributed to community outreach initiatives by participating in health education and prevention campaigns with local Indigenous communities—an experience that further strengthened my communication skills and cultural competence.

Gap of practice: After completing my internship in December 2014, I graduated from university and did not practise medicine between January 2015 and June 2015 while awaiting placement in the mandatory medical social service, which is required in Colombia before obtaining full registration to practise medicine.

Internship

Shaio Clinic/ University Hospital North
12.2013 - 12.2014
  • Position: Intern.
  • Facilities: Shaio Clinic, Dg. 115a #70C-75, Bogotá, Colombia (December 2013 – July 2014); University Hospital North, Cl. 30 #37-293, Soledad, Atlántico, Colombia (August 2014 – December 2014).
  • Full-time position
  • I completed my medical internship across two quaternary-level referral hospitals in Colombia, gaining comprehensive exposure to a wide range of medical and surgical specialties. At Shaio Clinic in Bogotá—a leading centre for cardiovascular and neurovascular care—I undertook focused four-week clinical rotations in Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Orthopaedics, Infectious Diseases, Endocrinology, and Gastroenterology. These rotations enabled me to build a solid foundation in managing complex inpatient cases within a high-acuity, multidisciplinary environment.
  • In addition, I completed further core rotations in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Emergency Medicine, and General Surgery at University Hospital North, a major university hospital located in a metropolitan coastal region.
