Policy Officer

Employed with the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment, and Water in the Nature Strategy Branch. This branch is responsible for developing the Nature Strategy and Biodiversity Conservation Act of 2016 reforms.

Key responsibilities

  • Regularly undertake research, policy, and legal analysis, evaluation, and writing to support the development of policy and legislative reforms.
  • Prepare high-quality and fit-for-purpose reports, briefing notes, and other written material to contribute to the evidence base for the development of policy advice and initiatives.
  • Prepare detailed, accurate and timely responses to correspondence from external stakeholders and advice to internal stakeholders.
  • Served as Secretariat to the Biodiversity Conservation Advisory Panel (BCAP).
  • Coordinate meetings and stakeholder consultations to support policy development.

Key achievements:

  • Contributed to the reform of the Biodiversity Conservation Act of 2016 and the development of the NSW Nature Strategy.
  • Led a project with the Science Division, articulating key concepts integral to the proposed targets in the Nature Strategy.
  • I acted as a Senior Policy Officer in the Biodiversity Offset Schemes (BOS) branch for six weeks (May - June). During my time, I had to distill complex information on the mechanics of environmental markets within a short timeframe, and I contributed to recommendations in response to the IPART review on the NSW Biodiversity Credit Market.
  • Developed policy papers on complex policy issues such as natural capital and nature markets, landscape-scale restoration, and ecologically sustainable development.

This was a contract role in the Major Projects branch which developed policies to support carbon abatement and circular economy to reduce carbon emissions.

Key responsibilities

  • Prepared briefs, reports correspondence and advice for senior team members.
  • Liaised on environmental policy matters with senior management and different teams across EPA.
  • Contributed to development of projects and programs of a cross-jurisdictional/ cross-portfolio nature on matters such as regulation review and policy development.
