  • Duties of a Registrar cardiology and the Private surgical assistant
  • Assisting in all types of cardiothoracic surgical procedures, as mentioned earlier, the open and minimally invasive approach- all elective procedures.
  • Registrar in Cardiology Fiona Stanley Hospital, broad exposure to acute and chronic cardiovascular diseases, emphasizing accurate ambulatory and bedside clinical diagnosis, appropriate use of diagnostic studies, and integration of all data into a well communicated consultation, with sensitivity to the unique features of each individual patient.
  • Attendance at medical grand rounds and multidisciplinary conferences is highly desirable, particularly at conferences closely related to cardiovascular disease, such as conferences on surgery, radiology, and pathology.
  • The Registrar is responsible for the day to day medical care of patients in the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) including advanced heart failure management includes inotropes, IABP, ECMO and LVAD, post cardiac transplant patients and the Ward patients.
  • The Registrar -supervise the work of a House Officer, with whom they will organise the investigation and management of inpatients under the care of the department, requesting assistance from the Consultant on call when required.
  • The Registrar make sure their patients are safely and efficiently handed over and to liaise with the other health professionals in the unit to ensure the required level of coordinated care to the patients is achieved and maintained.
  • Supervising the Junior Doctors in all aspects, including discharge summary, plan of follow up and long term management.
  • The Registrar -undertake a daily morning and evening round of all patients in CCU and ward and an additional daily round of the CCU/SDU with the supervising Cardiologist.
  • The Registrar- to attend Consultant wards rounds and will have a current knowledge of the progress of inpatients under their care.
  • The Registrar - maintain a satisfactory standard of documentation in the files of patients in CCU/ward.
  • The Registrar - maintain a high standard of communication with patients, patients' families and staff. The Registrar will confer at all times with other clinical team members regarding discharge planning and progress of patients.
  • Attend rostered outpatient clinics, 3 sessions per week, and endeavour to see outpatients at their scheduled appointment times.
  • Out patients for pre-assessment in the department or who are to be discharged will be discussed with the Consultant Cardiologist.
  • Undertake regular exercise tolerance tests on Cardiology outpatients (2 sessions per week) and inpatients and also be available for consultation and advice to other registrars. The CCU registrar is also rostered to one inpatient referrals session, and should see referral patients prior to discussion with a Cardiologist.
  • The Registrar -answer calls from GPs and will make appropriate decisions regarding the disposition of these patients.
  • The Registrar -undertake investigation or treatment of patients in the CCU/Ward where appropriate and request assistance from the Cardiologist on call when required.
  • The Registrar is undertaking GP ECG reporting and liaises with the GP regarding important abnormalities by telephone if necessary and discusses interpretations of ECGs with the Cardiologist if required.
