Core Responsibilities of a Registered Nurse in Aged Care

  • 1. Clinical Care
  • Assessment & Monitoring: Regularly assess residents' physical, emotional, and mental health.
  • Care Planning: Develop and review individualised care plans tailored to each resident's needs.
  • Medication Management: Administer and monitor medications, ensure proper documentation, and manage medication-related issues.
  • Wound Care: Provide wound assessments and dressings.
  • Chronic Disease Management: Support residents with conditions like diabetes, dementia, arthritis, and heart disease.
  • Palliative Care: Provide end-of-life care, ensuring comfort, dignity, and support for residents and their families.
  • 2. Leadership & Supervision
  • Team Leadership: Supervise and support Enrolled Nurses (ENs), Personal Care Assistants (PCAs), and other care staff.
  • Training & Mentoring: Educate and mentor junior staff; ensure ongoing skill development.
  • Delegation: Delegate tasks appropriately while ensuring quality of care is maintained.
  • Conflict Resolution: Manage interpersonal issues among staff or with residents/families.
  • 3. Communication & Collaboration
  • Family Liaison: Communicate with residents’ families about care updates and changes.
  • Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Work with doctors, physiotherapists, dietitians, and other health professionals.

  • Resident Advocacy: Support residents’ rights, preferences, and dignity.
