Kye Madden

I joined South East Radiology as a Diagnostic Radiographer in July 2022 as a new graduate after completing my Bachelor of Medical Imaging at the University of Canberra. Over this time I have had the opportunity to work in both private practice and hospital settings. Learning skills in areas such as General X-Ray, General CT, Angiography, Trauma X-ray/CT, Interventional Fluoroscopy, Theatre, Cardiac CT, OPG.

Responsibilities

• Maintained a high level of competency while advancing my knowledge of industry best practise in various imaging modalities, including X-Ray, Fluoroscopy and Computed Tomography.
• Assist Radiologists with interventional procedures such as periradicular nerve injections and organ biopsys.
• Collaborate with multiple healthcare teams at Bowral District Hospital while on-call and working weekends to best facilitate patient scheduling and workflow.
• Care for patients and staff wellbeing by adhering to strict radiation safety protocols during all radiography procedures.
• Work effectively with other radiographers and healthcare professionals in the safe manual handling and imaging of trauma/critical care patients.

As a student radiographer working I was able to go on placement at St George Public Hospital. At a large Metro Hospital I was able to develop skills that would struggle to be replicated in a smaller private practice/ regional hospital. I believe this benefited to a wider range of attributes as a new graduate.

Skills

• Work collaboratively with a large unit of radiographer, nurses and wardspersons to efficiently X-Ray patients in a busy ED setting.
• Perform mobile radiography on critical patients in the ICU with a team of radiographers.
• Perform theatre fluoroscopy for cases such as orthopaedics, urology and angiography.
• Develop X-Ray competency in a general setting.

As a Student Radiographer I took part in a 5 week placement at Xplore Radiology, a private practice in Narellan, NSW. During this placement I increased my skill and confidence in performing general X-Ray and CT with minimal supervision.

Skills Learnt

• Increased efficiency and image quality with Diagnostic General X-Ray.
• Improve communication while explaining procedures to patients, positioning patients, gaining informed consent and explaining radiation risks for pregnant patients.
• Assisted in the setting up of the CT room and positioning of patients for scanning.
• Observed and learnt General CT protocols, including the use of Intravenous Contrast. Gained an understanding of specific timings for scans such as portal venous or arterial.
• Improved knowledge in interpreting plain radiographic and cross-sectional imaging.
