Occupational Therapist Grade 2/Massage Therapist - Tallangatta Regional Health Service

April 1999 - October 2002

I was initially employed in a full time position (Grade 1 rotational OT) by Wodonga Regional Health Service and contracted out to Tallangatta Regional Health Service two days per week. After approximately 19 months of contract work I was offered a full time position at Tallangatta Regional Health Service as the first Occupational Therapist to be employed by the Health Service. I was also a qualified Massage Therapist so part of my employment role was as the hospital’s Massage Therapist to staff, clients and community groups.

While employed at Tallangatta Regional Health Service I developed the Occupational Therapy Department (which included managing a small budget), interviewed, employed and trained two Occupational Therapy Assistants, was classed as a Senior Hospital staff member on the same level as the Grade 5 Nurses (as documented in the yearly hospital report booklets). Covered a 15 bed acute hospital ward (medical, detox, palliative and oncology beds), a 15 bed dementia unit/nursing home, a 60 bed Hostel, the Tallangatta, Eskdale and Mitta Mitta townships, a wide farming community. I participated in obtaining funding for, and setting up an outreach Diabetes Clinic (Doctor and 5 staff), an outreach Falls Clinic (doctor, physiotherapist, nurse and OT), Health Promotion in the local area, formal education in the local community and at other agencies (including stress management and massage to the Mother’s Group and Tallangatta High School year 11 and 12 students). I was on the OH&S Committee, the Quality Committee, the Nutrition Committee and periodically presented to the Hospital Board. I left this job to move to Melbourne.

I worked on the surgical ward, medical ward, Rehabilitation in the Home Program, Palliative care in the community, Hospital in the Home, Pain Program, Community Rehabilitation, Community Occupational Therapist, hand therapy, Tallangatta Regional Health Service contract work two days per week and also did locum work for the department on my days off when I had resigned from the position to work at Tallangatta Regional Health Service. Previous to working as an Occupational Therapist I had worked in: retail, stenographer, general administration, administration management, jillaroo in Western Australia, Volunteer Bus Driver for the Police Boys Club in Albury, and had two of my own businesses – a helicopter business with my husband and my own part time massage business where I specialised in massaging people with disabilities, cognitive impairment and depression.
