I'm an 19 year old male currently working and studying. Last year I was working two jobs whilst also tackling my last semester of year one university. Although I gained a larger work ethic and an amazing amount of experience in the real world the long distance jobs I was working were a problem. All the traveling for work took time away from my studies which I will definitely need for this year. That is why currently I'm seeking out an occupation that is local to me diminishing all the traveling hours I previously had. If the occupations I had were local I'd simply still be working in them, explaining why I hadn't held the jobs I had for long periods of time.
This job took me a step further away from hospitality and into the realm of warehouse work and delivery driving. During the week I was required to work roughly two hours in the warehouse in the early morning lifting boxes when unloading vans and placing the wine content on delivery pallets. This job required heavy lifting skills as wine is typically a heavy product. After the delivery pallets were full each person was assigned a pallet to deliver. Due to the fact that I was given a large range of routes my knowledge of Melbourne grew extensively. The actual delivery process spanned from four to eight hours.
After the Covid/flood victim facility closed down I transferred to the intercontinental hotel on Collins street as a Porter. This job consisted of organising and conducting valet parking whilst also being responsible for guests luggage. I'd typically work 8 hour shifts which consisted of mostly physical work whilst also working on the computer to enter anything necessary into the excel system or searching guests. Due to the hotels five star rating a high level of professionalism was expected from us as employees forcing me to develop strong customer service skills.
This occupation took place at a government facility ran by Accor, which housed flood victims. As a team our duty as logistics team members was to transport recourses from one location to another using electric tugs connected to trailers. These recourses included electric hot boxes, Cambro trollies and trays. As well as operating the transport of these recourses we were also in charge of waste management within the facility. This involved replacing bins at all bin locations, again using the tugs and trailers whilst also organising the empty and full bins allowing the waste company to easily identify the full bins from the empty's.
