Summary

I have a Bachelor of Education degree in Primary School studies and have been teaching Year 4 children for 15 years. I believe that each year in a student's education is critical, in terms of the curriculum taught, how the students are engaged in learning, and how they are valued within the classroom context. For this reason, it is important to have the right people in a classroom-supporting each child, embracing their differences, encouraging them, and most of all, loving them through not only their triumphs, but challenges as well. A loving classroom where children feel safe to share their ideas is conducive to quality learning. Working in a school, my goal is to build good rapport with each child and recognize their unique learning styles. Taking an interest in the holistic development of each child in the class, builds relationships that are key to effective learning and teaching. Being consistent, reliable, adaptable and being a good member of the team, is important to me.

Work History

Year 4 English and Mathematics Teacher

Merrifield Preparatory School and College
01.2021 - 12.2024
  • I was responsible for creating and implementing English and Mathematics lessons using the IEB (Independent Examinations Board) curriculum guidelines, to all Year 4 students. Besides creating the Mathematics and English curriculum/Modules, I ensured that the implementation of my lessons were engaging for all students, ranging from academically weak, to the academically above average. I provided weekly feedback to management regarding the development of the subjects and the progress of students. I enjoyed collaborating with colleagues ensuring that my lessons were cohesive and fun. Engaging with parents was paramount; I met with them regularly, to discuss the holistic development of their children. In the afternoons, I provided Mathematics tutoring for children who were struggling to grasp concepts or simply needed reassurance. It was most rewarding to note the improvement in their performance and their confidence in the subject. I had excellent rapport with both students and colleagues, with parents often requesting for students to be placed in my base class. Establishing a positive learning environment that is conducive to learning and sharing is of utmost importance to me.

Year 4 Teacher

Hudson Park Primary School
04.2010 - 12.2020
  • I taught Languages (English and Afrikaans), Mathematics, and Sciences to my base class of 32 students. I designed and implemented the lessons for the above subjects, with the guidance of the South African CAPS curriculum. I enhanced classroom engagement through my varied teaching methods, which in turn, improved student behaviour. I am consistent and fair in my classroom management, with clear expectations and consequences. Having open lines of communication, and accurate records of student progress, behaviour and overall well-being, ensured that parents, colleagues and students felt valued and supported. I was the Grade Head for 2 years which included managing staff meetings, moderating grade assessments, managing discipline within the grade, and ensuring good teamwork among staff members; aiding the efficiency of the grade.
  • For a further two years, I was promoted to the Academic Head of Years 4 to 7. This involved moderating the curriculum, analysing learner results to inform better teaching strategies, holding weekly meetings to ensure the smooth running of academic structures and teacher performance, and providing feedback to the headmaster and district officers at the Department of Education.
