  • Within this role, I manage the budget for practical units in Forensic Science. Collaborate with academic staff and unit coordinators on the design of experiments, keeping up with relevant tertiary teaching and learning strategies. Acquisition, care, preparation (physical and chemical), processing, maintenance and disposal of materials used for Forensic Science teaching. Contribute to delivering practical and field exercises. Train staff and students in forensic and analytical techniques as required. Perform equipment routine troubleshooting and problem-solving and organise maintenance schedules and non-routine repairs. Support and promote compliance with relevant legislation and University policies and procedures, including equity and health & safety, with the potential for accreditation by relevant bodies. Review, develop and implement new techniques and procedures or improve existing techniques and procedures in accordance with relevant scientific studies. The core forensic techniques I implement include processing mock crime scenes, exhibit analysis, proper handling of forensic evidence, forensic DNA analysis from collection to data analysis, and chemical criminalistics.

  • My responsibilities as a laboratory assistant included specialising in genomic sequencing and employing advanced MGI high-throughput sequencing technology. The main responsibilities associated with this position involve managing a two-person sequencing laboratory, DNA/RNA extraction, RNA enrichment and purification using various methods, library preparation for diverse sequencing applications such as whole genome, RNAseq, stLFR, and HiC conversion, and operation and maintenance of the sequencer. I also have experience using Illumina, Ion Torrent, and Kingfisher DNA extractors. Stringent documentation of experimental procedures, results, and observations in laboratory notebooks and electronic databases. Adherence to laboratory safety protocols and quality assurance standards to ensure compliance with PC2 regulatory requirements. Other tasks consist of data analysis, chemical preparation. financial budgeting of stock ordering and tracking stock of high financial value. I am expected to liaise with a range of professionals for laboratory and machine maintenance.

  • Duties include daily sanitisation of the forensic clean room of varying intensities on a rotating roster, including daily, biweekly, deep, and intensive cleans. The clean room must be completely free of all contaminants that may contain DNA material. Adherence to SOPS at a company and ISO 9001:2008 level. Assembly of forensic kits for a wide range of testing within various organisations (WAPOL, QPS, SAPOL, SARC, TRANSIT, SGPOL). All kits must be produced promptly following stringent protocols and meeting deadlines whilst having the ability to adjust the plan of action in real-time to overcome obstacles and increase working efficiency. Interpersonal communication is required to ensure stock is at an acceptable standard and that all stock expiration dates, and batch numbers are listed. Record kit production and preparations, ensuring they are acknowledged by all team members and recorded using batch tracking forms and a forensic kit register.
