I am a nurse/ midwife with 30 + years of experience. I firmly believe it is a privilege to work with families in the community and am very eager to expand my knowledge and help to make a difference. I always wanted to be a nurse and after finishing year 12, I was accepted into the 3 year Diploma of Nursing course at Monash University. I completed the Bachelor of Nursing Conversion in the summer of 1992/3 and was extremely fortunate to be selected for The Alfred Hospital Postgraduate Program. I initially worked on a surgical ward and quickly found my place in the Road Trauma Unit. I enjoyed the fast pace dynamic nature of the work. This experience held me in good stead for the obstetric emergencies I would encounter when 3 years later I commenced my midwifery training at Latrobe Uni. In 1996 I was accepted into the midwifery graduate program at Mornington Peninsula Hospital. I regularly rotated through Birth suite, Postnatal and Special care nursery. I then went on to become a Clinical nurse specialist working in charge of either birth suite or postnatal and was involved with developing education for staff and Childbirth Ed classes. I also completed a Lactation Consultant course through Deakin University. In 2001 I had my daughter and my sons in 2005, 2008 and 2012.. I thoroughly enjoyed my maternity leave but was always drawn back to midwifery. In 2007 I started working on the nurse bank at Casey Hospital in birth suite, postnatal and special care nursery. In 2014 I obtained a position with Ambulance Victoria as a RN/RM midwifery specialty call taker which I enjoyed but I missed midwifery so I returned to Casey Hospital in 2018 where I worked primarily in postnatal and in EPC. Unfortunately COVID hit in 2020 and having 4 children home schooling made the prospect of returning to work outside the home not feasible. I applied for a position in a GP clinic that enabled me to coordinate care plan consultations remotely. It was to just be temporary but I had built up a strong rapport with my new patients so I stayed. Whilst not working in a traditional midwifery setting, I have continued to care for women with pregnancy related issues as well as families with babies and small children with medical issues/ learning difficulties and been involved in collaborating with other health professionals to create a plan for their care. I have also been involved with infant immunisation schedules, postnatal checks, baby weights and breastfeeding issues. My future aspirations include hoping to further my career by studying the Graduate Diploma of Health (Family and Child Health) in 2025.
