I learned to identify over 100 species of tropical fish, however, I opted for benthic surveys rather than fish.
  • Oceans Campus Mossel Bay, South Africa (2014) Assisted in field work and data collation for a number of projects encompassing shark population dynamics, cetacean abundance and behaviours, tidal flat populations and benthic and pelagic shark behaviours. This also involved assisting with the management of the campus aquarium and assisting the skipper whilst aboard the boats.
  • Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme South Ari Atoll, Maldives (2013) Assisted in daily data collection, sighting, sexing, photographing and measuring of whale sharks, and then helped further with identification via computer programmed spot identification and matching.
  • Department of Environment and Primary Industries Warrnambool, VIC Australia (2011-13) Duties involve spotting, and constantly searching for whales from shore, and logging sightings, and sea, weather and visibility conditions. We acted as representatives for the DEPI and often relay our purpose and information regarding the whale and their migration to the general public
  • Eco Sud - Lagon Bleu Project, Blue Bay, Mauritius (2012) Included taking part in fish transect surveys which formed the major part of the program, and required us to identify and quantify species types for a database which will help determine the state of the reef in terms of health and population ecology.
There was also plastics surveys on the beaches, data entry, compiling and delivering a presentation on the health of the Blue Bay Marine Park to locals, and assisting with small tasks involved with running of community action day for the local reef.
