Under the supervision of my Nurse Manager and Senior Nurse, my role and responsibilities as an Admission and Recovery room Registered Nurse are as follow;

Prepares the area(s) for patients.

  • Washes hands before assuming morning tasks and prior to delivering of care.
  • Opens the unit for the day as per policy. Wipes counters and equipment with germicide.Keeps area clean, neat and patient ready.
  • Stocks and restocks area. Assures the availability of all necessary equipment and supplies. Identifies items needing to be reordered or procured.
  • Assists in the proper preparation of supplies, equipment and medication involved in patient care.
  • Keeps senior nurse, VMO and care person informed of patient’s needs and progress.
  • Correctly identifies patient. Provides additional instruction. Introduces self and team members to patient and care persons. Identifies patient verbally and with ID bracelet (Name and DOB) and offers brief explanation regarding health team member roles

Plans for patient care.

  • Admission: Admits patient to pre-procedure area performs and documents assessments. Verifies with patient and care person the procedure to be performed. Prepares patient for Endoscopy/ Colonoscopy.
  • Recovery room: Receives report from procedure room nurse and evaluates needs of patients, administering care accordingly. Compares stability of vital signs with pre-op to establish parameters.
  • Assesses and documents patient status. Carries out treatments and/or orders.
  • Assure patient safety.
  • Performs pre- and post- procedure assessments giving discharged instruction and teaching. Includes the care person in teaching to ensure adequate home care.

Performs other related duties:

  • Assist with area clean-up and restocking.
  • Cleans cupboards and maintains logs.

  • Handles issues in the ward, e.g. habitual absenteeism etc. and gives support and counsel to personnel with problems.
