- Maintaining wetsuit rack and boardroom in professional order
- The first 30 hours of supervised training included teaching a wide range of age groups (Children and Adults) while being supervised by a senior instructor
- Many qualifications were required to be an instructor such as a first-aid certificate, a working with children certificate, and passing a supervised lesson test
- Lessons were generally 3 hours for adults and 2 hours for children and handicapped clients
- Forecasting surf conditions was key to determine whether or not surfing conditions were safe (swell size, rip currents, level of surfing experience of clients, etc)
- Being able to adapt to ever-changing surfing conditions
- Making clients safe in and out of the water by explaining in-depth crucial elements such as what a rip current is or reminding them to stay out of the red and yellow swimming flags
