Matthew Yong

Manufacturing Systems Engineer
Sydney,NSW

Summary

Hi there! I am Matthew Yong, an engineering student passionate about learning about the world around me, especially complicated mechanisms and systems. I have enabled this curiosity by pursuing a Bachelor of Engineering in Mechatronics, allowing me to apply my knowledge by designing real systems. I am currently working at MicroTau as a Manufacturing Systems Intern.

Work History

Manufacturing Systems Engineering Intern

MicroTau
01.2025 - Current
  • MicroTau is an Australian startup with the goal of decarbonising the global aviation fleet. MicroTau's drag-reducing riblet modification package reduces fuel consumption and emissions for commercial and defence aircraft.
  • As an intern with the Manufacturing Systems team, I perform a wide variety of tasks, interacting with various teams across the company (including Manufacturing Operations, Technology Development, Materials and Testing).
  • My day to day tasks include researching new potential projects, compiling engineering reports, designing mechatronic subsystems and performing safety risk analyses.

Powertrain Engineer

Redback Racing, UNSW
09.2022 - 12.2024
  • With 150 students and 12 departments, the team designs, constructs, and races a small open-wheeled race car. It competes against all major Australian and international universities at the annual Formula SAE Australasia competition, run by the Society of Automotive Engineers, Australasia.
  • As an engineer within the Powertrain department, I am intimately involved with the core components of the car, especially the batteries and high-voltage circuitry. I have been involved with Redback since 2021 and have devoted roughly 600 hours across two cars as part of the team. Some of my roles so far have included helping design, validate, and manufacture the mounts, securing the battery to the chassis, and designing and manufacturing a brace to secure the battery segments within the accumulator. Since most of Redback's components are manufactured in-house, I regularly work on machining and fabricating the required parts. This enables me to hone my practical skills in CAD, FEA and machining, working to solve real-world problems beyond the lecture theatre.

Research Intern

Hillhouse Capital
01.2024 - 02.2024
  • As a research intern for Hillhouse Capital, I worked on two projects, performing market research on consumption habits for digital goods and services (specifically the app economy) in the ANZ markets. My research focused on the app-based food delivery market and its interaction with the local and regional F&B market. I also studied the e-commerce market and which services appeal to specific demographics. To conclude my internship, I presented my findings to the team, providing a conclusive evaluation and recommendation.
