Max Cochrane

• During my time volunteering at the wildlife sanctuary, I worked with a diverse range of animals including birds, meerkats, quolls, gliders, koalas, wombats, and various macropods. My duties included preparing diets, feeding animals, cleaning and maintaining enclosures, and observing animal health and behavior. I assisted with enrichment activities to promote natural behaviors and wellbeing, and supported the team in maintaining high standards of care and safety. This role strengthened my animal husbandry skills, knowledge of native wildlife, and commitment to conservation and ethical animal management.

At Irukandji, I gained a hands on experience working with marine species including sharks, rays and various fish. My responsibilities involved assisting with daily feeding routines, cleaning, and general animal husbandry. I also interacted with guests to promote marine education and conservation awareness, ensuring both animal and visitor safety. This role developed my confidence in working with aquatic animals, and strengthed my understanding of marine ecosystems.
