Summary Of Experience
Since relocating to Australia my most recent role has been working as a paediatric palliative care nurse. I have been committed to providing high quality care to children and families accessing Very Special kids Hospice, working effectively as part of a skilled, creative and compassionate team. Within this scope of practice, we provide both respite and palliative care for children aged 0-18 years. Since working in this healthcare setting, I have excelled my clinical skills in enteral feeding, tracheostomy care and working with children with disabilities. The start of my healthcare career began whilst completing my degree at university I was given the opportunity to work as an assistant practitioner in the community (enrolled nurse). After the completion of my degree, I started my nursing career in the cardiac intensive care unit in the major trauma centre, James Cook university hospital. Within the setting I gained wide range of knowledge of cardiac care and cardiac services that are provided to patients. I cared for patients both pre and post operatively of routine operations but also cared for emergency cardiac patients who required ICU input after an arrest. After working on the Unit, I decided that I would like to go back to the community care setting and work as a staff nurse. I provided care to patients within a range of settings including their own homes and residential care homes. I gained knowledge in long term conditions, became competent in varying wound care and gained a deep interest into palliative care. I continued to work in the community for the next 3 years in different Trusts, enhancing my knowledge in wound care, catheter care and diabetes management. In the height of the covid pandemic I returned to work as a bank (pool) nurse but remained in the community setting. I began to work for the Out of Hours team, which provided community care to caseload patients but outside conventional working hours i.e., overnight. The out of hours caseload primarily received calls/need from those palliative patients requiring symptom control. Spending my time with these patients and overnight where there is minimal support has given me a passion to deepen my knowledge into palliative care. I strive to provide the best care for these patients at the end of their life.
