INTRODUCTION

I interviewed my partner Sheldon's mother Myra and his stepfather Pete. It took place in their home on the day we celebrated Pete's mother Pegg's 100th birthday.

HIGHLIGHT ANY SIMILARITIES OR DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE AGES OF THE TWO INTERVIEWEES.

Myra is 79 years old, healthy, active and is still working as a casual at Woolies. Pete is 78 years old retired, not as active and has some health issues. This is both their second marriage and both have children from their first marriages. Pete has two children, a boy and a girl, four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Myra has two boys and they both didn't have any children.

REFLECT ON YOUR INTERVIEWING SKILLS.

I didn't feel nervous about doing the interview because Myra and Pete are such a lovely couple they made me feel really at ease. I made sure I was prepared before the interview by writing down the questions and read through the questions and making sure I understood them. So if Myra or Pete didn't understand the question, I could explain it to them.

PROVIDE SUGGESTIONS OR EVIDENCE OF THE POSITIVES AND NEGATIVES OF THE INTERVIEWING PROCESS AND HOW YOU COULD IMPROVE THEM IF REQUIRED TO DO SO.

I felt the interview was a little rushed because Myra and Pete were sort on time. It would have been nice to be able to get more in depth answers and find out a little bit more about them. If I had to do this again, I would pick a day when Myra and Pete had more free time.

HIGHLIGHT WHAT YOU LEARNT OVERALL FROM UNDERTAKING THIS ASSESSMENT?

I learnt that just because you're an older person, doesn't mean that you can't do anything and that you always need help or assistance. I was inspired and really admired Myra and Pete's approach to life and how they have lived it and overcome obstacles and still remained so positive. I can only hope that I am as independent and positive as them when I'm nearly 80 years old.

DID YOU IDENTIFY ANY SERVICES THAT WOULD BE ABLE TO EMPOWER THE OLDER PERSON TO REMAIN IN THEIR ENVIRONMENT AND MEET THEIR CURRENT NEEDS?

At this point in time Myra and Pete are living independently and are coping very well with their day to day lifestyle and activities. They want to remain in their home so I believe that in the future they will need some services like maybe meals on wheels or in home support.
