I graduated from Central Queensland University in December 2014 with a Bachelor of Nursing. I have worked with the DHHS/THS as a registered nurse since 2017, working the Cardiology ward, Acute Oncology and Hematology ward, the Chemotherapy Outpatients, Clinical Trials Department of Oncology and Hematology and Clinical Trials Department in Multiple Sclerosis, Community Nursing and currently Hospital At Home. Currently studying second semester of Post Graduate in Primary Health at UTAS in February 2024, and about to complete Excellence in Practice Pathway.

  • During this time I was both cannulating, accessing and de-accessing devices, administering chemotherapy according to EVIQ and clinical trials protocols
  • This period also saw me educating both patients and their carer about their treatment, side effects, routine blood tests, and liaising between their other medical team
  • Referrals being made to palliative care, social worker/grief workers, occupational health and community nurses for accessing and de-accessing infusaports, Hickmans, and PICCs.

  • During my role as a registered nurse on 2D, I was attending to patients who had had cardiothoracic surgery, devices inserted, strokes, and heart attacks
  • This time saw me being required to monitor telemetry machines and perform ECGs
  • Monitoring pain and observations according to the ADDs form which also required particular patients having modifications scores due to their cardiac conditions implemented
  • At times, the monitoring of mediastinal chest drains was necessary, with both the dressing changes/condition of site, fluid balance required to be documented
  • I was fortunate enough to witness a CABG 84 be performed by one of the surgeons which learned another element of my learning.

  • I was in charge of 1-2 ECA's with the responsibilities of up to 21 patients on my shifts as well as being the crew warden in the event of a natural disaster
  • As well as my in-charge duties, I performed audits on stock and was in charge of ordering medical supplies, medications, and continence aides
  • My role in charge allowed me the opportunity to participate in quality improvements through recommendations to riskman events to requesting reviews from the GP's for quality improvement in patient care.
