A protection officers role is to manage the interface between rail workers and work sites near or within the danger zone within the rail corridor, to ensure complete compliance with rail safety network rules and procedures, through the use of safe work authorities and methods.

• Briefing workers and protection officers of worksite protection arraignments and ensuring that it is adhered to at all times
• identifying potential hazards and risks to on track work prior to commencement of work duties
• identifying proper and appropriate protection methods in regards to any risks or hazards that may arise
• filling out all appropriate documentation relative to protection methods or authorities that are to be implemented
