During my 7 ½ years at Families SA, Intercountry Services, I provided comprehensive case management to unaccompanied refugee minors and their families from diverse backgrounds including Africa, Afghanistan, Asia, Middle East, and Australia. As an experienced social worker, I handled complex cases, collaborated with less experienced staff, and offered cultural consultancy to supervisors, senior practitioners, departmental psychologists, and principal social workers.
Assessment Officer – Out of Home Care Team
Perform comprehensive assessments of prospective foster carers using Step by Step and Wingaya tools, including background checks and DSCI Screening. Collaborate with Carer Assessment and Registration Unit (CARU) to finalize assessments. Coordinate and provide ongoing training for foster carers, covering orientation, Shared Stories Shared Lives, Child Safe Environments, and Infant Safe Training.
I managed Tracing and Refugee Services in South Australia, facilitating support for individuals separated by conflict or disasters, and providing case management for refugees and asylum seekers. I oversaw the Asylum Seeker Assistance Scheme (ASAS), administered by ARC and funded by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC), ensuring clients received necessary medical and financial aid during refugee status processing. Additionally, I managed case files for families and individuals in community detention, liaising with DIAC and ARC national office. As an international tracing officer, I regularly visited Baxter Detention Facilities to address humanitarian concerns and provide tracing services.
