Permanent Cat 3 Contractor for Rio Tinto Weipa Operations:

  • Attend daily pre-starts with the OT Supervisor to plan out the days and focus on key objectives, with a requirement to step up into this role on occasion.
  • Conduct daily Critical Control Verifications before work begins.
  • Work with Dispatch and Workshop to identify any HME priority works required for the 3 Main Systems. Hitachi Wenco, Motorola Tetra, and Tyre Sense.
  • Work with stakeholders on the repair and maintenance of Flir CCTV and Gallagher Access Control.
  • Conduct daily and weekly inspections of site critical systems and infrastructure, like comms towers and server rooms.
  • Assist with minor and major projects, including the site Motorola Tetra to DAMM Tetra upgrade.
  • Manage site compliance issues via SAP and Service Now

Communications Technician

Communications Tower Installations:

  • Work as the Communications Tech on a crew of 4 to 5 people installing comms towers across sites in central Queensland.

1st - BMA Cavil Ridge Ramp 40 Tower.

  • Installation of a 60 m guidewire tower on Ramp 40 dump as part of a wider DRS upgrade.
  • Complete the wiring of coax and -48V systems in a fresh shelter, and completed all required documentation required by the site.
  • Worked as a standby tower rescuer while tower work was being conducted.
  • Worked as an electrical TA for generator installations and 415V tray work.
  • Worked with the site maintenance team for the cutover of the Motorola P25 system from the old R30 tower.
  • Assisted in the decommissioning of the old tower.

2nd - Anglo American Moranbah North Tower.

  • Installation of a 40m freestanding tower in the development area as part of a network extension project.
  • Complete the wiring of coax and -48V systems in a fresh shelter, and completed all required documentation required by the site.
  • Worked as a standby tower rescuer while tower work was being conducted.
  • Worked as an electrical TA for generator installations and 415V tray work.

3rd - Bengalla Mine DRS upgrade.

  • Worked as project labor with the Maintenance team to pre-install Sepura radios in preparation for the Motorola DMR to DAMM Tetra upgrade.
  • Worked in sites' workshops to replace radios across the entire HME fleet, with daily and weekly KPIs to meet the site cutover date.
  • Assisted with general site maintenance, such as realigning radio links, repairing the existing fleet equipment, and performing minor LV works.
  • Cut over day required all 72 HME radios to be swapped out over the course of 2 days

4th - Boggabri Mine Expansion Project

  • Installation and Commissioning of two towers, 40m guide wire and 15m relocatable, to assist with the site expansion project and to increases network reliability.
  • Complete the wiring of coax and -48V systems in a fresh shelter, and completed all required documentation required by the site.
  • Worked as a standby tower rescuer while tower work was being conducted.
  • Worked as an electrical TA for generator installations and 415V tray work.

Kestrel Coal Backhaul Link Upgrade:

  • Site appointed a supervisor for the project to upgrade the capacity and reliability of the backhaul link for Kestrel Coal Mine.
  • Both on-site and off-site work to upgrade the -48V systems for two remote towers, the town of Emerald Tower.
  • Installation of fiber optics up towers to support high-capacity networking.
  • Installation of Ceragon radios to replace aging equipment.
  • Meet site deadlines for the project.

Kestrel North-to-South Link Repairs:

  • Emergency project to repair the critical link between sites due to rodent damage.
  • Work with multiple parties for the temporary repair of the fiber, followed by a full replacement of sections of the 8-kilometer link in conjunction with site shutdowns, with time limits imposed on all works.
  • No production was affected during the repairs over a 2-week period.

Glencore Camp Wi-Fi Project:

  • During my weeks off, I worked with the Mining Network Engineer to design a solution for a tender on the Camp G-Pon system.
  • Collected quotes and made estimates, resulting in FSG winning the tender.

Radio Systems and Communications Technician

Byerwen Mine Maintenance and Small Projects:

  • Attended a daily site prestart with the IS&T team.
  • Daily checks of site critical systems, with a focus on Ubiquiti wireless links and the site Motorola DMR system.
  • Check the ticket system for any overnight priority tickets.
  • Continue with daily tasks: physical site checks and testing, workshop HME radio faults, and new site HME radio installations.
  • Assist the project's electrician with Mino site works, including server UPS upgrades, new repeater installation, and trailer 12/24v lithium installs.
  • Work through the site service ticket system to assist with issues across the site.
  • Attend end-of-shift meetings to discuss the day's events and interactions while closing out finished tickets and conducting any prep work for the next day.

1st Kestrel Coal Security/Communications Upgrades:

  • Attend Daily Prestarts on-site with the site supervisor before splitting into teams of 2
  • Work on Gallagher Access Panel upgrades (from 3,000 to 6,000) by removing old controllers and rewiring to suit the new ones. Upgrading readers, attaching, and reprogramming the system to suit new site rules.
  • Increased sites CCTV system from 6 to 72 Cameras access both the Wash plant and general buildings on site
  • Install new fiber cables and terminate them for areas of the plant that didn't have modern connectivity, utilizing scissor lifts and EWPs.
  • Remove old Cat3 and Cat5 cables from existing infrastructure, utilizing scissor lifts and EWPs.

2nd - Ketsrel Coal & Ensham Coal Ad hoc work:

  • Work across both Kestrel North and South and Ensham Mines (surface work only) on an ad hoc basis to the maintenance team.
  • I attended prestarts with the maintenance team and was assigned daily tasks.
  • Work focus was assisting I.T. and PCN engineers with network outages caused by physical faults.
  • Fault-finding fiber by testing with an OTDR and repairing by either fusion splicing or simple cleaning.
  • Attending End of Shift Handovers to fill out Job cards and report progress to Maintenace Team leader

3rd - Ensham Coal Lab and Plant Upgrades:

  • Worked with the Enwise Projects Team to install 400m of fiber with 4 Fobots, with further testing of all plant fiber.
  • Attended daily prestarts and worked with the shutdown crew to align with system outages for testing.
  • Using an OTDR, we tested and labeled fiber throughout the site, and updated existing plans to reflect results.
  • Assisted the Projects Team with running and terminating small fiber links to replace existing damaged links.

4th - Ensham Coal Gallagher Installation:

  • Received a promotion to Leading Hand to run the project to replace the site's aging access control system.
  • Spent 2 months working under the Site Electrical Engineer to pre-fit the Gallagher system in preparation for a site cutover.
  • Over four days, I ran a crew of six to methodically change out key locations to Gallagher while working with Site HSEQ and Security to manage staff access.

5th - Vulcan Mine Stage 1:

  • Leading hand for the project for the installation of CCTV, access control, and fiber optics to the New Vulcan Coal Mine.
  • Attending Preatart with the construction crew before splitting off into the communications crew.
  • Trenching of 2 kilometers of fiber terminating at several key locations across the mine.
  • Installation of CCTV at the site office and entryways via drop poles.
  • Pre-installation of Gallagher access control and time-on-site systems.
