ABOUT THIS HOSPITAL: The Prince of Wales Hospital is a major tertiary teaching hospital affiliated with the University of New South Wales. The Adult Intensive Care Unit/High-Dependency Unit is a Level 6 accredited unit under the College of Intensive Care Medicine of Australia and New Zealand. It provides comprehensive critical care for complex medical and surgical patients in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams. As a teaching facility, it offers education and training for medical, nursing, and allied health professionals, supported by a dedicated ICU Education Team that promotes clinical excellence, research, and professional development in a high-acuity environment.

Roles and responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive critical care nursing for patients requiring advanced life support, including mechanical ventilation, CRRT (Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy), and hemodynamic monitoring.
• Deliver evidence-based nursing care in accordance with ICU protocols, clinical guidelines, and hospital policies.
• Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualised nursing care plans for acutely ill patients.
• Perform invasive and non-invasive monitoring, including arterial lines, central venous catheters, and vasoactive medication infusions.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (medical, allied health, and nursing) to optimise patient outcomes.
• Provide family support and education regarding patient condition, treatment, and ongoing care.
• Maintain infection control standards, ensure safe medication administration, and manage emergency responses effectively.
• Participate in clinical education, audits, and quality improvement initiatives within the ICU.
• Support junior staff and students, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional development.

Main roles and responsibilities

●Be accountable for assessing, prioritising and implementing nursing care.

●Evaluate the extend of care as prioritised.

●Provide direct care to patients which includes administering medications, monitoring signs of improvement or deterioration, in condition and titrating infusions/medications as per patients needs.

●Assisting in procedure including endo tracheal intubation, cardio pulmonary resuscitation and tracheostomy insertion.

●Care of patients on multiple ionotropic supports and handling of ventilated and tracheostomy patients.

●Monitoring vital signs and ensuring the proper function of ventilators and other invasive and non-invasive respiratory supporting equipment’s.

●Monitoring patients for signs for infection, shock,haemorrhage, and overall general conditions.

●Care of speciality patients such as trauma and orthopaedic renal spinal and HPB.

●Administer all routes of medication and good understanding of ABGs and other blood values.

●Carry out safety checks as part of daily routine and identify any safety issues. Reporting any issues promptly through the correct and relevant reporting channels.

●Ensuring documentation is accurate and legible within trust guidelines.

●Supporting patients’ families throughout difficult times. Making referrals to specialist teams such as organ donations, family supporting teams, social services,and safeguarding referrals.

●Participate in team working and maintain effective communication between members of the multi-disciplinary team.

●Work in partnership on discharge planning within the health care team.

●To work within the scope of nursing practice and undertake training to develop both existing and future skills needed, completion of relevant competency package.

Department : - Medical Surgical intensive care unit

Working hours : 48 hours per week

Main duties and responsibilities:

●Closely monitor acute conditions, including oxygen saturation, heart rate and rhythms,blood pressure control arterial line management, and titrated infusions and conscious sedation drugs.

●Assisting in emergency procedure including endotracheal intubation, and tracheostomy, central line insertion, trilizer insertions.

●Assists doctors with bedside invasive and non-invasive procedures.

●Develop patient care plans, including assessments, evaluation, and nursing diagnosis.

●Ensures efficacy of treatments through monitoring of treatment regimens.

●Collects blood, tissue and other laboratory specimens and prepares them for lab testing.

●Discuss patients’ condition with concerned physician and carryout all the orders madefrom them within the timeframe.

●Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality.

●Documentation of all events.

●Escalation of injuries or harm associated with health care to the concerned authority.
