I have participated in many volunteer conservation programs both in Australia and overseas including Cairns turtle rescue and rehabilitation centre, Parley for the oceans, Great Barrier reef foundation and various animal rescue groups in Cairns and FNQ. Abroad I spent time in South east Asia participating in programs including Elephant rescue and rehabilitation care and Dog rescue and rehabilitation care in Thailand. Gibbon monkey program in Laos spending time in the forest collecting data and information to help create create viable habitat protection and rehabilitation programs. In Cambodia I worked with disadvantaged children assisting with english lessons, general running of the centre, teaching sports, the younger children to and from school and the older children with basic computer skills and hospitality skills to help them gain employment so as they would be able to support themselves when they became of age they would have to leave the orphanage.
As I haven't been employed as a support worker but hope to move into a career within the youth and family invention sector I would like to add some more information of skills and personal experience I have gained over the years that I believe is relevant to the position I am applying for.
I am from a large family of 6 children and a large extended family so have always had lots of people around with different dynamics. All of my siblings had children young and I played a major part in helping raise most of them. I have had to help a number of family members through difficult times with mental health and substance abuse problems and took on custody of some of my nieces and nephews at different stages, all of them coming to me with severe trauma and complex mental health issues. I was able to help them work through and overcome a lot of issues and they have all grown into smart, confident young adults and are becoming parents themselves. I have been involved in other youth projects over the years such as Edican youth festival, holding workshops at Wangetti girls academy where I helped the students learn about nutrition, health and hygiene, self care, confidence building, parenting advice (as some of the young women were already parents and trying to finish their high-school diploma) and basically just being someone they felt comfortable to converse with and trust so I could guide them to relivent support programs they needed.
