As a commercial floor layer I worked in many large scale projects in my year and a half with Menegola Flooring Company, including the Langley link IGA, Hyatt regency, and recently the lovely wool carpets at Varsity Cannington. I would prep floors by grinding them down, and screeding them, then either lay carpet tiles or rolls, and in some cases vinyl tiles.
