I have always been passionate about working with children. As a 19-year-old, I looked after a young boy who needed speech therapy. A part of my responsibility was to take him to his sessions with his speech pathologist. After a few visits to the clinic, I had my mind set that I wanted to start a career in speech pathology. I was so inspired by how the clinician connected with the child and how she supported him to strengthen his language and phonology. This had an amazing impact on his behaviour and his ability to create friendships, which was something I never conceived at the time would be an outcome of speech pathology intervention.
A graduate position at DECYP that offers support and access to professional development is highly appealing. Through working at a clinic with speech pathologists, I have come to appreciate the power of keeping up with recent research, technology, and knowledge to provide the best care. The field of speech therapy is constantly evolving, and having access to learning opportunities while working, ensures that my practice remains of high quality and evidence-based.
I have an innate sense of adventure. I have traveled to most states within Australia, apart from Tasmania. Exploring new landscapes and cultures and meeting new people while working is incredibly enticing, and I hope that my application is considered favorably.
I volunteered in an remote Aboriginal community and school for two weeks. It was the most enriching and amazing opportunity I have yet experienced.
I provided support to children in a year 5 class. My responsibilities included helping the children with reading, writing and craft activities.
