Summary

After growing up in Canberra surrounded by and visiting cultural institutions, Olivia Pereira aspires to work in museums and cultural institutions. Olivia volunteered with the Museum of Australian Democracy and accepted a position as a Casual Museum Experience Officer, where she currently works. Olivia completed two internships in her undergraduate degree with the National Museum of Australia and the University of Canberra's Campus Estate. Now, Olivia is studying for a Master of Museum and Heritage Studies at the Australian National University with a specialisation in museums and collections. Olivia aspires to be assistant curator in a museum with a focus on Australian social and cultural history. Olivia has been accepted to do the 2024 Open Palace Programme to England and was awarded a scholarship of 500 Pounds to go towards the Programme.

Casual Museum Experience Officer

  • Guided groups of up to twenty-five people on tours of the Museum of Australian Democracy for up to forty-five minutes on Spotlight and Highlight Tours
  • Worked at the Museum Reception, undertaking ticket sales, cash handling, external and internal phone calls, cloaking, tour promotion, directions and retail sales
  • Carried out floor sweeps while making conversation with visitors and answering any questions about the Museum
  • Successfully conducted Visitor surveys, PlayUp resets, Start and End of Day Procedures

Accomplishments

2022 100-hour internship with the University of Canberra's Campus Estate

  • For the first project, Olivia took photos, collected information and created online collection database forms for the Sports Memorabilia Collection in eHive.
  • For the second project, Olivia reorganised and researched the Indigenous artefacts on display at the University of Canberra. Additionally, Olivia created object and exhibition panels


2021 100 hour internship with the National Museum of Australia

  • For the first project, Olivia conducted visitor surveys for the Audience Research Department by approaching visitors and asking them questions to assist the Museum
  • The second project, Olivia evaluated the National Museum of Australia's online collection of coronavirus and bushfire related material and suggested improvements.
