Graduate Nurse Program at Austin Health
Rotation One: Acute Geriatric Care
May-November 2024
During my first nursing rotation, I built upon the foundational knowledge gained throughout my training, developing confidence and competence in a fast-paced acute geriatric setting. Over the six-month period, key learning highlights included caring for patients with complex behavioural needs, enhancing my professional communication skills to navigate sensitive conversations with patients and their families, and refining essential clinical skills such as oral and IV medication administration. I also developed strong time management and prioritisation abilities, as well as sound clinical judgment in the escalation of care when necessary.
Rotation Two: Acute Spinal
November 2024- Current
In my second rotation, I continued to build on my foundational nursing knowledge while gaining extensive experience in the care of patients with acute spinal injuries. Clinically, I developed confidence and competence in managing complex wounds, including those requiring VAC therapy, and became proficient in the insertion and ongoing care of indwelling catheters (IDCs), as well as the management of PICC and CVAD lines. I also gained strong clinical insight into troubleshooting common line complications and ensuring safe, evidence-based care. This rotation deepened my understanding of neurogenic bowel and bladder care, and strengthened my ability to provide holistic, empathetic support to patients and families adjusting to new traumatic injuries and life-changing disabilities.
Monash Medical Centre: RUSON – May-December 2023
Whilst completing my finals 6 months of study I was able to work as a student nurse in the emergency department within Monash Hospital. My role included assisting nursing staff with their patient load and daily care needs of patients.
