Nautilus Australia Limited | 01.1998 - 12.2001
Nautilus Australia Limited (“NAL”)
NAL was an international Ship Providore. NAL operated 12 branches Australia Wide, one branch in New Zealand and wholly owned subsidiaries in Singapore and Malaysia. NAL was a public company listed on the Australian Stock Exchange from year 1994 to 2003. NAL, at its height, had a consolidated turnover of AUD 100 million. NAL has since delisted and has become a privatized franchise in Australia.
Key Responsibilities:
Since the public float of NAL in 1994, its financial performance as public company was considered well below par as it had not returned a profit in its first 6 years. Accordingly, the position of the Company Secretary and CFO revolved around significant informal restructuring, equity raising and acquisitions that could be absorbed into NAL’s infrastructure to give the group competitive edge.
My roles included being responsible for all Board Papers, Board matters, Annual Financial Accounts, Stock Exchange requirements, regular Branch visits, consolidated financial monthly management accounts and attendance at all board Meetings.
I was also a member of the Finance Committee, a subcommittee of the full board.
Annual Group budgets including all foreign operators including Singapore, East Timor and New Zealand.
Full international inter-company consolidation.
Key Achievements:
Directly responsible for getting the Group refinanced on move favourable terms.
Following major internal restructuring and streamlining operational activities, and close monitoring of margins, the Group reported its first profit in seven years.
In recognition of significant contributions to the financial result, the Board awarded 500,000 free stock options to me.
Participated in 5 detailed due diligence Reviews which culminated in the Group acquiring two strategic investments.
Conducted a non renounceable Rights issue raising AUD 5 million for restructuring.
NAL set up an offshore branch in East Timor in an attempt to diversify its operations.
NAL originally established the Branch in year 2000 at the same time the United Nations moved into East Timor following the civil war.
The Company was successful in engaging a general manager; however this party’s performance was considered below par and the Board offered the position to me, taking into account my former experience in successfully working in developing economies such as Papua New Guinea.
I accepted the role and assumed duties in January 2001.
Key Responsibilities:
NAL established wholesale frozen and dry food operations in Dili East Timor.
The Timor operations employed 30 East Timorese and three expatriate employees.
Responsibilities included the ordering and importation of products from Australia, Singapore and Indonesia and wholesale to the United Nations, supermarkets and restaurants operating in East Timor.
As General Manager, all pricing and margins were at my discretion to achieve the budget set by management.
Multi currency dealings were also required in USD, SNG, AUD and Rupiah.
I managed the operation successfully for 12 months.
As it was likely that NAL was going to privatize and with the planned mass withdrawal of UN troops in early 2002, I opted to resign from my position and return to Brisbane, Australia in December 2001.
