CN/RN Day Oncology Unit

  • I transferred to the Day Oncology unit, to work in a less physically demanding department due to a shoulder injury
  • Responsibilities include Assessment of patients, gaining vascular access e.g
  • IV cannulation (with or without ultrasound), Port-a-Cath access or PICC line access/dressing changes, giving infusions and chemotherapy, observing patients, treating a wide-range health conditions and working with several different specialists e.g.
  • Neurology, Haematology, Rheumatology, Oncology, General medicine.

RN/CN Anaesthetics

  • I transferred to the operating department, where I gained skills, knowledge and experience in anaesthetic nursing in all surgical specialties offered at ‘The Friendlies’
  • Through a combination of formal education and teaching from my nursing colleagues, medical specialists and self-directed learning, I have developed very deep and thorough knowledge base relating to of this branch of peri-operative nursing
  • I have come to appreciate that I can encompasses all my previous passions of acute physical, psychological and spiritual care
  • In addition to general nursing assessment care planning, and care delivery I became proficient in rapid assessment, diagnosis and resolution with complex anaesthetic machine issues in a fast-paced environment
  • I developed excellent relationships with the surgeons and anaesthetists and with relevant anaesthetic equipment sales and support representatives
  • I further developed my interest in IV vascular access and became proficient in Ultrasound guided IV cannulation and was able to insert some PICC Lines under the supervision of one of the anaesthetists.

  • I was responsible for standards, quality, performance management, policy development and review
  • I deputised on many committees for the Director of Nursing
  • I was a member of the Trust Nursing Executive Team
  • I audited nursing standards and nursing documentation on a very regular basis in the clinical environments
  • I was also responsible for the implementation of an electronic nurse rostering system across the 3 hospitals
  • I participated in the Senior Manager on-call rota.
