Projects

Global Project Based Learning in Tokyo, Japan

A 2-week study tour conducted in Shibaura Institute of Technology, Japan between 30 June 2024 - 14 July 2024

Key responsibilities

  • Collaborated with Japanese students at a partner university to propose an innovative yet affordable product in which technology and manufacturing methods could be applied
  • Visited Japanese manufacturing companies LPS works and Climb works to study common manufacturing methods such as laser micro-machining, injection molding, 5-D laser cutting and die cutting that significantly contributed to my project’s findings
  • Participated in cultural exchange events including visiting festivals, historical and cultural sites which deepened my cultural understanding and strengthened my interpersonal skills.

Outcomes

  • Created a proposal on developing Nano clean contact lens which aimed to eliminate eye discomfort for wearer
  • Used “SolidWorks” to successfully develop a prototype of the contact lens which increased oxygen permeability to Cornea by 28% through laser micro-machining nanometre wide holes which were also able to block tear drops, light dispersion, bacteria and UV rays
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in international and multicultural environments
  • Received praise for the research project by SIT professors and was awarded ‘Best Presenter’ as well as ‘Certificate of Completion’

External Forced Convection Group Presentation

For the subject: heat transfer, in year 3 semester 1

Achieved a grade of 98/100 for this Project

Key responsibilities

  • Researched laminar and turbulent fluid flow over flat plates and cylinders.
  • Used Ansys fluent to extract velocity and temperature profiles for different types of laminar and turbulent fluid flow over a flat plate.
  • Used Ansys fluent to analyse flow separation, stagnation point and wake region for different Reynold’s numbers and then compare them.
  • Explored vortex shedding phenomenon occurring in bluff bodies and its real-life applications in aerofoils.
  • Collaborated in a group of 5 to demonstrate key findings in a 15-minute video presentation.

Outcome

  • Successfully achieved CFD simulation results that effectively visualised different element of heat transfer and forced convection as well as demonstrated its real-world applications.

Pumped Hydro Energy System Storage Group Project

For the subject: Thermal Fluids, in year 3 semester 1

Achieved grade of 19/25 for the Project

Key responsibilities

  • Performed a feasibility study of developing a pumped hydro system for energy storage in a small remote island with residents.
  • Developed a design of the Solar PV coupled with a pumped hydro storage power supply system.
  • Used excel to calculate various parameters of Francis turbines and pump impellers.
  • Collaborated in a team of 3 to present a detailed report of the design.

Outcome

  • Successfully designed a pumped hydro system with a pump capacity 6.37% greater than storage volume which enhanced Pump Hydro System’s ability to store energy during periods of excess energy generation.
