  • I have collaborated and published several research work in Neonatal medicine:
  • Nutrition and BPD: A case-control study to investigate the relationship between growth, early nutritional and fluid support, and the likelihood of BPD in the current era of parenteral nutrition and early enteral feeding. I was the Principal Investigator, responsible for the ethics application, identifying patients, obtaining consent, data collection, statistical analysis and interpretation. I wrote the first draft of the manuscript and was responsible for editing subsequent versions. The manuscript has been published.(Malikiwi A, Wong F. Postnatal nutritional deficit is an independent predictor of bronchopulmonary dysplasia among extremely premature infants born at or less than 28 weeks gestation. Early Hum Dev 2019 Apr; 131:29-35. doi: 10.1016/j.earlhumdev.2019.02.005)
  • Cardiovascular function and BPD: This study aimed to compare systemic arterial structure of preterm infants with severe BPD, to infants without BPD. I was a Co-investigator, responsible for identifying patients, obtaining consent. I facilitated the data collection process with echocardiographic interpretation with a senior colleague. This project resulted in two publications. (Sehgal A, Malikiwi A, Paul E, Tan K, Menahem S. A new look at bronchopulmonary dysplasia: postcapillary pathophysiology and cardiac dysfunction. Pulm Circ. 2016 Dec;6(4):508-515. doi: 10.1086/688641), (Sehgal A, Malikiwi A, Paul E, Tan K, Menahem S. Systemic Arterial Stiffness In Infants With Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia: A Potential Cause Of Systemic Hypertension. J Perinatol. 2016 Feb 25. doi: 10.1038/jp.2016.10.)
  • PDA severity score to predict chronic lung disease or death: This was a multicentre prospective observational study in premature infants. As one of the centres participating in this study, I was involved in ethics application and data collection that was subsequently submitted to the principal investigator in Canada. This project resulted in a publication. (Afif EL-Khuffash, Adam T James, John D Corcoran, Patrick Dicker, Orla Franklin, Yasser N ELsayed, Joseph Y Ting, Arvind Sehgal, Andra Malikiwi, Andrei Harabor, Amuchou S Soraisham, Patrick J McNamara. A Patent Ductus Arteriosus Severity Score Predicts Chronic Lung Disease Or Death Before Discharge. J Pediatr. 2015 Dec;167(6):1354-1361.e2)
  • Indomethacin vs ibuprofen for PDA closure: This was a retrospective cohort study comparing infants treated with intravenous indomethacin with infants who received intravenous ibuprofen lysine for PDA closure. I was responsible for the ethics application, identifying patients, obtaining consent, data collection, statistical analysis and interpretation. I wrote the first draft of the manuscript and was responsible for editing subsequent versions. This project resulted in a publication. (Malikiwi A, Roufaeil C, Tan K, Sehgal A.
