Orthopedic Acute Care/ED and Orthopedic Outpatient Department

Experience with The Orthopedic Outpatient Department caring for patients of all ages covering acute emergency/trauma, follow-up appointments and specialty clinics. No day is the same with a variety of tasks including wound management, casting, splinting, patient education and running a variety of clinics.

All patients presenting with acute emergency and trauma are seen at the Acute Orthopedic Care (OAC) in the Emergency Department. In addition to this follow up care is organized in the Orthopedic Outpatient Department (OOPD) with clinics Monday – Friday 0800-1730.

  • Responsibilities
  • Maintaining a comprehensive overview of all patients allocated to orthopaedic team and to make informed decisions on resource and support allocation
  • Provide clinical support, education, and leadership to the OAC RN’s.
    Taking a ‘lighter’ patient load should allow you to coordinate clinical
    support/education to RN’s who may lack experience or confidence or who may need support due to workload.
  • Maintaining effective communication with the ED team leader throughout the shift allows more efficient coordination off resource allocation such as procedural sedation and patient handover.
  • Liaise with the Orthopedic Registrar regarding plans for all GP Referral patients.
    Ensure that all RN’s have an appropriate workload.
    Oversee the allocation of bed spaces in OAC
  • Ensure daily tasks have been completed – Drug check, treatment room checks, OAC shift report
  • Supporting RNs to provide care i.e holds, analgesia checks, MDT referral
  • Monitoring status of investigations i.e imaging to maintain flow
  • Coordinating care to increase flow +/- casting, analgesia, mobilisation, procedure, MDT referral.
  • Taking over patient load of RNs who leave to do casting elsewhere i.e resus/ the ward
