  • In this section, I am involved in the fleet’s Planned Maintenance Optimization and that is, continuous reviewing and make effective changes where necessary in major service routine tasks, major component change out and its failure analysis, life cycle cost of each fleet, thus improving equipment reliability and availability.
  • The Key Performance Areas that I’m involved in and in-line with my job scope are;
  • Investigation of Adverse Events
  • Use root cause failure analysis methods to promptly investigate equipment incidents as they occur – breakdowns, major repairs, rework, over-runs etc.
  • Preventive Maintenance Monitoring
  • Monitor the Preventive Maintenance (PM) workload and report if they are not done as and when intended. Review completed PMs to ensure that they area correctly written up and auctioned. Report any PMs that need updating or are not well written
  • Equipment Inspection
  • Inspect critical equipment when operating and during shutdowns and disassembly work, to verify condition and rate of deterioration.
  • Carry out three-monthly inspection and stock take of nominated critical spares and rotables, in conjunction with stores staff, and report on findings.
  • Provide Forecasting Information
  • Gather information on equipment condition and rate of deterioration. Use monitoring and measurement methods to identify failure dates and forecast / initiate pro-active component replacement. Utilizing VIMS monitoring, Filter cutting, Oil Analysis Trending
  • Equipment Performance Analysis
  • Find the main short-term contributors to poor equipment performance and implement improvement actions, through analysis of monthly performance data (downtime, throughput, cost and workload).
  • Provide a three-monthly report on nominated critical equipment, outlining current condition and rate of deterioration, and the steps being taken to ensure high levels of reliability and control.
  • Continuous Improvement
  • Identify parts that are subject to early failure, expensive, or maintenance unfriendly. Determine design improvements and seek approval to conduct trials. Conduct trials of small-scale equipment modifications, subject to the trial approval process.
  • Ensure that adequate QA practices are in place for any major off-site repairs or manufacture of critical equipment components.
  • Some other projects involve the modification of the mobile fleet system so as to improve availability and making the fleet more reliable. One of the prime tasks in the section is the Condition Monitoring Programmes we have in place. I oversee and administer condition monitoring techniques; Oil Analysis and Magnetic Plug Inspections and VIMS monitoring, i.e. SOS oil analysis to identify early stages of failure on component conditions. In this section I administer and manage failure trends of the 785B/C haul trucks, RH200 shovels, Drilltech drills, CAT 992 loaders and CAT D10T dozers. Thus, advising and make recommendations to respective fleet supervisors and on some of the critical results on in each fleet accordingly. I also do the magnetic plug analysis and make recommendation accordingly.

In the last 4.5 years since joining Fortescue, my career highlights are., Initiated OEM/vendor engagement on product performance issues. Setting out clear goals and expected outcomes on respective stakeholders., Introduce and fully embed a consistent and standardised maintenance strategies across Liebherr excavator and Epiroc drills across FMG operations., Introduce a Liebherr R996B and R9400HP/E end of Life (EoL) extension proposal, fully embedded., Introduce a standardised defect elimination process and maintenance tactics and technics across Fortescue sites., HME Decarbonisation studies – Excavators & Drills TCO modelling of R9400E vs R9400HP (Diesel vs Electric) TCO Modelling of PV27E vs PV271 Diesel (Diesel vs Electric vs battery), Performing a physical audit on Liebherr diggers to identify any gaps on latest improvements that were supposed to be install on the machine; hence, set up minimum standardisation on the rest of the fleet across the FMG sites., An improvement on servicing kits and standard servicing/inspection templates that are used across multiple sites., Additionally, introduce Senior Reliability Engineer position across all Fortescue sites. The introduction of Senior positions is to establish site reliability leadership and empower the reliability team to drive reliability solutions; thus, improving fleet performance overall., While with BHP MECoE, I develop and deploy the Liebherr R9800 BH Excavator total equipment strategies, Utilising jack-knife analysis to identify chronic and acute systems on the equipment and recommend maintenance tactics and practices to prevent and eliminate those failure events., Perform statistical analysis and strip down component reports to identify optimal characteristic life of major components; hence, put in place change out maintenance strategies., Developing financial impacts and Whole of Life of the Asset base on optimised maintenance strategies, Deploying the BHP Operating Discipline System roll-out (ODS) to the MEM Field Execution Supervisors, Deployment and Execution of BH Excavators Daily Inspections using standardised work principles, Initiate and deployed the standardised work strategy on the R9400 and R996B daily zone servicing at Yandi Load & Haul Execution team, Initiate and deployed the PV271 Autonomous Surface Drill equipment strategies and Whole of Life Extension, 45000H to 60000H with a realization of capital replacement savings of $11.52M in FY21 and $53.91M in FY22, Initiate the modification and redesigning of the PV271 equalizer bar centre pin sacrificial bushing.
